Social Work Supervisor

Job Description The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of Family Well-Being and Protection, Bureau of Child Protective Services, is seeking a Social Work Supervisor. This full‑time position will be domiciled in Des Moines and will serve that and surrounding counties. The role involves working with families who have experienced abuse and neglect, preparing and supporting children and families to be successful, and connecting families to community resources. The supervisor will plan, direct, and supervise a unit of social workers who conduct child‑abuse assessments and provide child‑welfare services. Work hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, with extra hours as needed including after‑hours and weekend on‑call rotation. An in‑office presence is required and travel to various offices and court hearings will be necessary. Mileage is paid at $0.50 per mile. Daily Responsibilities Coordinate and implement goals and objectives to achieve desired outcomes. Provide clinical supervision to ensure child safety. Communicate and adhere to current policy and procedure affecting the work. Assign work to ensure efficiency in service delivery and equitable workload; approve travel claims, payroll, leave requests and other personnel functions. Assign and monitor work schedules, manage overtime allocations, and provide input to administration. Supervise job duties and performance through regular individual supervisory conferences. Train new employees and provide regular performance evaluations at least annually. Review and approve all legal documents before submission, ensuring compliance with Iowa Code. Conduct case‑record reviews to ensure compliance and quality; review worker written work, computer documents and other documents for accuracy and timeliness. Use technology to monitor, track, approve and direct workflow; conduct regular unit meetings. Respond to customer and employee inquiries and concerns in a timely manner to resolve issues. Establish and maintain working relationships with collateral partners and maintain knowledge of community resources. Be available on a rotating basis after hours and on‑call, providing case consultation, crisis resolution and approval of emergency removals. Candidate Qualifications Experience managing internal and external requests for information and legislative reviews; ability to assign and adhere to agency formatting and timely response. Knowledge of supervision principles, including delegation, training, performance evaluation, discipline and hiring. Knowledge of interviewing skills and techniques. Ability to obtain information from diverse sources; proficient with Word, Excel and the Internet. Apply management and administration principles; recognize and solve problems, develop practical solutions and select the best options. Communicate effectively orally and in writing to individuals or groups; make clear and convincing presentations; listen and facilitate open exchange of ideas. Build, foster and maintain partnerships at multiple levels; apply innovative solutions to problems. Design new methods when established procedures are unavailable. Prioritize, organize and meet deadlines; analyze information and draw accurate conclusions. Display high ethical standards, honesty and integrity; avoid theft‑related or dishonest behavior. Maintain regular attendance and punctuality; meet critical time frames to satisfy customer expectations. Respond appropriately to supervision; follow policy and cooperate with supervisors. Coordinate and oversee office budgets and controls; plan, administer and monitor expenditures. Work effectively in a team environment and manage group processes; encourage cooperation, trust and team spirit. Handle high‑stress situations calmly and effectively. Travel as required, including some overnight travel. Work extra hours as needed to complete tasks. Preferred Qualifications Preferred to speak more than one language. Preference will also be given for education or experience directly related to the requirements and duties of the position. Benefits Health, dental and vision coverage. Minimum Qualification Requirements Graduation from an accredited four‑year college with four years of full‑time social‑work experience, or Professional experience in a social‑work capacity may substitute for required education on a one‑year-per‑30‑semester‑hours basis, or Bachelor’s degree in social work with three years of full‑time social‑work experience, or Master’s degree in social work with one year of full‑time experience, or Equivalent combination of graduate education in social or behavioral sciences and qualifying experience up to a maximum of thirty semester hours for one year of required experience, or Current continuous experience within the state executive branch equaling at least 24 months of full‑time social‑work service (e.g., Social Worker 2, Social Worker 3/4, or Social Work Supervisor 1).
