Position/Job Description

DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION

Purpose: To organize, plan, and direct implementation of operations and activities involved in student transportation; communicate with parents, community representatives, local officials and the general public.

Reports To : Assistant Superintendent

Qualifications :

1. High School Diploma or GED
2. Hold a valid Class "B" Kentucky Commercial Driver's License; Driver Trainer School Bus Certification; completion and maintenance of certification by State Department of Education School Bus Driver Instructor Course.
3. Shall have demonstrated people skills to indicate the ability to function in a team oriented environment.
4. Shall have a working knowledge of computers.

Specific Duties and Performance Responsibilities:

1. Organize, plan, direct and implement operations and activities involved in student transportation to assure safe and effective transportation services.
2. Plan and direct pre-service and in-service training of bus drivers in cooperation with staff development and safety/security units.
3. Provide leadership for development of Student Safety, Vehicle Safety and Driver Safety Program.
4. Plan and approve transportation route and bus stop locations in cooperation with school principals and other school personnel involved.
5. Interview driver applicants.
6. Recommend drivers for employment and dismissal.
7. Train, assign, direct, review and evaluate work of assigned employees.
8. Receive documents, investigate and resolve issues, concerns, and complaints from parents, school personnel, drivers and monitors.
9. Communicate with parents, community representatives, local officials and the general public.
10. Attend workshops to remain current as Bus Driver Trainer, updates on driving regulations and law; attend and conduct safety meetings for drivers and students.
11. Coordinate communication between field drivers.
12. Prepare billing for special trips as required.
13. Assist with budget preparation as required.
14. Monitor and control budget according to established guidelines.
15. Prepare required reports and assure the preparation and maintenance of department records.
16. Prepare and maintain a variety of bus driver records, including Driver DATA (CDL License, DOT Physical Expiration, etc.) and training hours required for the certification of School Bus Driver.
17. Prepare and deliver oral reports as required.
18. Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent and /or Designee. General Duties and Performance Responsibilities:

3. Seek to establish friendly and cooperative partnerships between home and school.
4. Work to develop a positive public relationship between the school district and community.
5. Carry out assignments in a timely manner without undue checking.
6. React positively to directives given by supervisors.
7. Demonstrate a willingness to cooperate with district administrators, principals and staff.
8. Maintain the confidentiality, both verbally and in written form, of each student's educational records.
9. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
10. Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
11. Adhere to School Board of Education Policies and Procedures.

Equipment/Materials:


School bus and standard vehicle equipment; approved training materials


Physical Requirements: Medium to Light Work

• Ability to lift at least 40 pounds
• Ability to exert in excess of 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
• Physical Activities:

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist, and reach
• Ability to push, pull, or lift exerting up to 20 pounds of force
• Grasping - applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
• Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Voice will need to be loud at times in order to be heard.
• Hearing Acuity - perceiving speech and other environmental sounds at normal loudness levels.
• Visual Acuity - seeing at a level which allows reading of numbers and text, operation of equipment, inspection of machines, etc.
• Vision
  • Color - ability to identify and distinguish colors
  • Peripheral - observing an area that can be seen up and down or right and left when eyes are fixed on a given point. Working Conditions: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions as activities occur both inside and outside.
