Resident Directors (RDs) are an integral part of the TJC Residential Life and Housing Department. The RD is a part‑time paraprofessional staff member whose primary responsibility is to supervise the complete operation of a residence hall or assist a full‑time Coordinator with the supervision of a larger hall. The RD articulates to students and staff the philosophy and policies of the Residential Life and Housing Department at Tyler Junior College with enthusiasm and support while representing the Department as a role model in all facets of college life. RDs receive a furnished apartment (including all utilities, cable, and wi‑fi), a board plan, and a monthly stipend (significant monetary value) for their work, requiring on‑campus residency in an assigned apartment. Renewable contract opportunity: Eligible for renewal for up to two additional academic years post‑hiring, with a possible total eligibility of three academic years based on departmental needs and job performance. Initial contract term: August 3, 2026 – May 14, 2027 with the potential for renewal. Primary Responsibilities Must return to campus before the halls open for training each semester and must remain after the halls close to help with closing activities. RDs are required to stay until they are released by their supervisor each semester unless they are on‑call during that time. Conduct your personal and professional life as a role model and a 24‑hour representative of TJC and the Residential Life and Housing Department. Maintain good standing with the College and the Residential Life and Housing Department. Follow all laws, College and residence hall policies. Understand, support, follow, enforce, and educate students and staff about the following: Residential Hall Handbook Housing contract Student Code of Conduct Respect and maintain appropriate student and staff confidentiality at all times. Maintain ongoing communication with all Residential Life staff members. Display a positive, professional attitude and support towards students, staff, and the Residential Life and Housing Department. Handle stressful situations and work under pressure. Be able to respond and communicate effectively and immediately to all emergency and/or life‑threatening situations. Develop a holistic programming/community building program in the hall. Supervise the Entire Operation of the Residence Hall Directly supervise Resident Assistants (RAs) in their assigned halls and others if needed. Be available and accessible for the purpose of safety, security, emergency, or crisis intervention, and the general operation of the building. Accurately maintain hall records – emergency contacts, room inventory sheets. Coordinate with appropriate supervisor for empty room cleaning. Complete all administrative tasks in an accurate and timely fashion (including RORs, billing, etc.). Develop a sense of community within the building and entire residential community through programming and student development. Maintain high visibility and availability, including attending community events and interacting with residents. Actively and appropriately confront all disciplinary situations and document them as needed or work with RAs to do so in a timely manner. Coordinate with various college departments (i.e., Campus Police, Counseling, Affiliated group sponsors, etc.) to best meet the needs of the students and staff as directed. Develop RA staff Assist in recruiting, selecting, and training staff members. Assist staff in developing a variety of community‑building and programming activities for the hall. Hold weekly staff meetings. Hold a minimum of a bi‑weekly individual meeting with each RA. Maintain Building Safety and Security Ensure building security and safety, including being present for fire drills, coordinating monthly health and safety checks, and overseeing hall move‑in/move‑out/room changes with appropriate and required paperwork submitted. Stay up to date with residence hall emergency procedures. Walk assigned building(s) daily or as directed and report maintenance issues as required. Participate as a Member of the Residential Life and Housing Team Participate in training sessions and staff meetings and present topics/training sessions eagerly and enthusiastically. Participate in campus‑wide RD on‑call rotation including during residence hall closings. Crises/Emergencies in your assigned hall should be responded to regardless of whether or not you are on‑call if you are present in the hall. Cover office desk shifts and/or serve on departmental committees as directed and needed. Participate and attend mandatory campus/department events including (but not limited to): Apache Preview Day, Homecoming, Resident Appreciation Week, etc. Set goals and objectives for the position and discuss them with your supervisor. Perform other delegated responsibilities assigned by Residential Life and Housing professional staff.

No direct supervision Work Environment This is an 18 hour per week part‑time job, in addition to on‑call responsibilities (hall availability and on‑call are accounted for in the room, board and utilities part of the compensation; RDs are expected to be in their halls regularly including overnight with a maximum of two weekends [4 or 5‑day equivalent] away per month unless alternate arrangements are made with the supervising professional staff member). Weekends away/time off must be requested in advance and approved by the supervisor or the ADRL. Physical Demands Work involved walking, standing, lifting (up to 35 lbs.), sitting, pushing, bending, and repetitive typing. Travel Required No Required Experience Minimum of two semesters of Resident Assistant or related leadership experience. Additional Job‑Specific Requirements Availability for employment for the full term of this appointment (August 3, 2026 – May 14, 2027). Other employment must be discussed with and approved in writing by your supervisor and the ADRL or designee prior to obtaining or accepting it or this position. Understand there is a need for at least one RD staff member to rotate on call during official College closings to ensure there is appropriate coverage.EXPECTATIONS
