Program Assistant - Events (Part-Time)

Job Description Performs paraprofessional work assisting with planning, organizing, implementing, supervising special events, the Growers’ Market, special programs and related work as required. Work is performed under moderate supervision of the Events Manager. Work includes regular weeknight and weekend hours. Growers' Market hours are every Saturday, 7am - 1pm (May thru August). Events are generally Thursday and Friday evenings, 4pm - 10pm, and Saturday and Sundays ranging from 9am to 10pm. Essential Duties of the Position Assists with the organization and facilitation of various special events and programs, including setting up pop‑up tents, folding tables and chairs, children’s activities, facilitating crafts, promoting programs, providing general guest information, taking out trash, and cleaning up from the event. Event hours are generally Thursday, Friday nights and full days on Saturdays and occasional Sundays. Attend and work weekly at the Growers’ Market (all Saturdays 7am – 1pm will be required during market season May thru August), including set‑up and clean‑up of Market materials (signage, tents, tables, chairs etc.). Assist with Growers’ Market supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP) transactions. Assist in collecting participant feedback during programs/events through verbal interactions or digital surveys. Assist with coordination of volunteer activities at market and special events. Assist in the marketing of programs and events, including social media and physical flyers. Provide support for outside organization park rentals at Veterans Park by stocking and cleaning restrooms, collecting and disposing of trash, monitoring activities, assisting renters, ensuring compliance with Town policies and facility guidelines and addressing customer service needs. Provide customer service support at Town Facilities as assigned, including greeting visitors, answering questions, directing guests, assisting with program and facility inquiries and providing general administrative support. Occasionally drive town bus/van for programming needs. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Required Education and Experience General knowledge of the principles and practices of professional recreation, growers or farmers markets, or community events work; ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with the public and program participants; ability to provide working leadership to a group of event participants; skill in the use of instruments, tools or other equipment used in recreation facility and field maintenance activities; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates, activity participants and the general public. High school diploma or GED. Or a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to complete the essential functions and job responsibilities of this position. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license. Must possess or obtain first aid, CPR and AED certifications within 12 months. Prefer ability to read, write and speak Spanish. Physical Requirements This position’s physical requirements involve medium exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, lifting, carrying, and setting up event equipment such as 10x10 pop‑up tents and 6‑foot tables. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: balancing, climbing, crouching, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and/or walking. The work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g., outdoor park, recreation center front desk, facilitating programs in facility). Work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to moderate to extreme cold and heat environmental conditions.
