Position Overview The Riverside County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Forensic Pathologist (III/IV) to conduct autopsies, analyze investigative evidence, and provide expert testimony for the determination of cause and manner of death. The role does not fill immediate vacancies but establishes a pool for future needs. Salary Range Forensic Pathologist III $107.50 - $153.78 hourly ($18,633.71 - $26,655.56 monthly; $223,604.49 - $319,866.73 annually) Forensic Pathologist IV $118.25 - $169.15 hourly ($20,495.94 - $29,319.69 monthly; $245,951.26 - $351,836.34 annually) Additional Benefits 11% Difficult-to-Recruit differential Relocation pay may be available per policy. Educational loan repayment assistance is available per policy. Key Responsibilities Perform autopsies and evaluate investigative information to establish cause and time of death, including determination of natural, accident, suicide, homicide, or undetermined. Collect medical evidence such as trace evidence and secretions; conduct chemical and microscopic examinations of tissues and fluids; submit samples for toxicology and clinical laboratory analysis. Prepare detailed reports of findings; confer with judicial and law enforcement personnel and assist in interpreting autopsy findings for reconstructions of homicide or suicide events. Sign death certificates; testify at inquests, Coroner Review processes, and court trials. Maintain current knowledge of forensic pathology techniques, procedures, and equipment; conduct special research projects as assigned. Work Performance Measures Gain confidence of County staff, judicial agencies, legal representatives, media and public. Be viewed as a medicolegal expert in Forensic Pathology. Demonstrate integrity and professional standards. Answer technical questions appropriately for the audience. Follow policies, procedures, and standards established by the Chief Forensic Pathologist. Qualifications License and Certification: Valid Physician's and Surgeon's Certificate issued by the State of California and eligible for Forensic Pathologist Board Certification. Candidates accepted into an accredited fellowship in forensic pathology may apply. Valid driver’s license (must be obtained within three months of employment). Knowledge of modern medicine practices, autopsy techniques, coroner’s jurisdiction, toxicology, ballistics, trace evidence, forensic serology, forensic anthropology, DNA technology, and court testimony regulations. Able to perform skilled post-mortem examinations; review complex investigations; communicate effectively; serve as expert witness; write comprehensive reports; maintain effective relationships.
