PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Implement district school health program and provide direct services to meet the needs of the students and staff under the direct clinical supervision of the school health director or supervising RN.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:

1. High School Diploma or GED
2. Valid Texas Licensed Vocational Nurse issued by the Texas Board of nursing
3. Certified by Texas Department of State Health Services to conduct vision, hearing, and spinal screening current CPR/AED Certification
4. Certified by the UTRGV Boarder Health Office to conduct the Texas Risk Assessment for Type 2 diabetes
5. Minimum of one year nursing experience

Special Knowledge/Skills:

1. CPR, Clinical Nursing Skills, (i.e., catheterization, G-tube feedings, ostomies)
2. General clerical duties and file maintenance skills
3. Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish)
4. Strong computer, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
5. Ability to implement policies and procedures
6. Knowledge of community medical, health care services, and referral resources
7. Stop the Bleed Annual trainings
8. Narcan

Experience:

1. Minimum of one year nursing experience

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides direct care using school health protocols and individualized health plans (IHPs) established by the RN supervisor or medical advisor.
2. Administers medication to students according to board policy and district procedures.
3. Carries out mandatory screening programs, collect data, and complete required reports as directed.
4. Collaborates with campus principal, school counselor, teachers, parents, food service, and other staff regarding the health needs of the general population and those students with identified health conditions as directed by the supervising RN.
5. Communicates with parents regarding individual students as directed by the supervising RN, campus principal, or Health Services Director.
6. Participates in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee (ARD) meeting of students with identifiable health needs if the RN is unable and collaborate with appropriate staff and RN regarding implementation of health-related Individual Education Plan (IEP) items.
7. Distributes information to faculty or staff on health related topics as needed and as directed by the RN.
8. Provide guidance to unlicensed assistive personnel or other school staff on health related tasks as directed by the RN.
9. Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other documents required, including accurate, confidential health records on all students.
10. Complies with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
11. Adhere to and maintains patient confidentially at all times.
12. Administers or assists students with prescribed treatments/feedings as ordered.
13. Assists in maintaining accurate student health records, including, immunization records, medication administration records and individual student treatment records.
14. Participates in district-wide mandated health screening program, referrals and follow-ups.
15. Documents and maintains student health information on computer system and health record in a confidential manner.
16. Maintains current certification including First Aid, CPR, AED, vision, hearing, spinal, and acanthosis.

19. Inventories and maintains office and health supplies and health equipment.
20. Provides evidence of participation in continuing education programs to increase understanding and update skills (20 contact hours [CEUs] required every two years for license renewal) when requested.
21. Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
22. Performs other duties as requested by immediate supervisor.
23. Reports to duty at assigned campuses and times.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises and train School Nurse Aides, and medical assistants in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district policy.


EQUIPMENT USED:
Computer, scale, sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, thermometer, nebulizer, suction machine, audiometer, pulse oximeter, wheelchairs, oxygen tanks, and blood sugar monitor. Stop the Bleed kits, AEDs

Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension
Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting nonambulatory students
Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
High-risk exposure to blood borne pathogens/communicable diseases, responds and administers CPR - if necessary - until help arrives.
