Lumberyard Supervisor 

Location: Western Building Center, Evergreen, MT | Shift: Day Shift, Full-Time 

Position Overview 

Western Building Center in Evergreen is seeking an experienced and dedicated Lumberyard Supervisor to lead our yard operations team, oversee local delivery drivers, and maintain optimal material logistics. In this role, you will manage daily yard personnel, streamline the flow of stock inventory and special-order items from receiving to dispatch, enforce safety standards, and ensure accurate, prompt customer service for both contractor and retail customers. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Crew & Driver Leadership 

  • Direct, schedule, and supervise daily activities for yard staff, forklift operators, and delivery drivers. 

  • Enforce all OSHA rules, workplace safety protocols, load-securing regulations, and company safety standards to provide a safe working environment. Recognize unsafe conditions/behaviors and implement corrective actions to prevent injuries and property loss. 

  • Manage driver load schedules, delivery dispatching, and logistics to optimize delivery turnaround and efficiency. 

  • Conduct routine inspections for forklifts, fleet trucks, and yard equipment, coordinating necessary maintenance. 

• Material Flow & Delivery Dispatch 

  • Oversee the end-to-end movement, loading, unloading, storing, transferring, and distribution of stock lumber, building supplies, and incoming special orders. ● Inspect outgoing delivery loads to ensure compliance with shipping specifications, load limits, and safety regulations. 

  • Receive, inspect, and stage special-order materials immediately upon arrival, ensuring accurate labeling and customer notification. 

  • Coordinate staging areas for outward-bound contractor orders and delivery trucks to prevent bottlenecks. 

  • Monitor incoming vendor freight, verify packing slips against physical inventory, and resolve damage or shipping discrepancies. 

  • Assist with delivery runs when needed.

• Yard & Inventory Operations 

  • Maintain clean, organized, and safely stocked lumber bays, drive-through lanes, and exterior storage zones; ensure yard debris is appropriately recycled or disposed of. ● Maintain accurate records of current and future inventory, conduct regular cycle counts, and collaborate with retail counter staff to correct inventory discrepancies. ● Serve as the primary point of contact in the yard for contractor pickups, complex orders, and driver issues. 

  • Perform other duties as required. 

Competencies & Qualifications 

● Lumberyard experience and a working knowledge of yard and product activities on location required. 

● Customer service-oriented with a strong desire to deliver high-quality service, projecting a professional, positive attitude. 

● Reliable self-starter who takes initiative with strong attention to detail. ● Ability to plan, coordinate, and write work schedules, reports, and work processes to maintain and increase efficiency. 

● Knowledge of basic math, counting, and estimating. 

● Proficient computer skills. 

● Forklift experience required with a solid understanding of forklift operations and safety functions. 

● Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. 

● Ability to work overtime if needed. 

● Drug screening required. 

Physical Requirements & Work Environment 

● Able to lift up to 80 lbs on a regular basis. 

● Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions including sitting, standing, walking, and driving. 

● Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, drive, use hands/fingers to handle or feel tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, talk, hear, and type/use computer and phone. ● Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 

● Work environment: May be exposed to uncomfortable or distracting noise levels in the yard. 

● Ability to work outside in varying weather and driving conditions.
