Registered Respiratory Therapist Vascular Access Specialist

Position Summary This position independently provides and maintains peripheral and central venous access. The incumbent evaluates patients, recommends care, serves as a resource specialist, and assists with departmental activities, quality improvement, and development of best‑practice guidelines. Core Functions Reviews labs, patient history, and physician orders to determine the appropriate line, identifies potential issues or contraindications, collaborates with physicians on long‑term access needs, obtains patient authorization, and inserts peripheral venous or arterial catheters as indicated. Inserts and maintains peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) lines per policy, performs dressing changes, line reviews and declotting, utilizes ultrasound for accurate placement, reviews chest x‑rays, maintains a sterile field, and documents all steps timely and accurately. Inserts and maintains all central lines (simple and complex) in the neck and chest per policy, performs dressing changes, line reviews, port access and declotting, uses ultrasound, advanced anatomy knowledge, and specialized techniques, reviews chest x‑rays, keeps a sterile field, and documents appropriately. Participates in ongoing quality initiatives, monitors the department database, ensures bundle compliance, acts as a change agent, and contributes to the development, interpretation, implementation, and evaluation of quality goals and activities within clinical service lines. Acts as a resource to therapists and other healthcare practitioners concerning patient status, equipment, and operational issues, and participates in interdisciplinary rounding, offering therapy recommendations. Provides training, orientation, and patient education to staff, patients and families per policy and practice guidelines, and assists in the development of departmental policies and procedures based on best practice. Ensures efficient departmental workflow, monitors inventory of supplies and materials to prevent service interruption, and maintains associated equipment. May occasionally provide respiratory therapy services as prescribed, including arterial line insertion, FDPAC and IAPB insertion, and invasive or non‑invasive cardiac outputs per established policies and procedures. Independently provides central and peripheral vascular access and advanced clinical monitoring techniques to a diverse patient population, serves as a resource to staff, and directs staff as needed. Internal customers: Nursing management and staff, medical staff, and all interdisciplinary health care team members. External customers: Physicians, office staff, payers, community agencies, and regulatory agencies. Minimum Qualifications Associate or technical degree. Successful completion of a PICC training course and Banner Health Sims Lab training for CVC insertions. Good standing with the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Current state license, as required by state law. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). In‑depth knowledge of clinical techniques, applications, and equipment typically obtained through 4years of RRT experience, including1year of independent PICC or CVC line insertions. Highly effective human‑relation skills for interacting with patients, families, staff, and other healthcare personnel. Preferred Qualifications CPUI and VA‑BC certifications preferred.
