TAMIU is a Hispanic Serving Institution with over 8,000 students located in Laredo, Texas, a vibrant and bicultural city with a population of about 250,000. The university advances knowledge through research and discovery, teaching and learning, community engagement and public service, and with an intentional focus on student success and research excellence.

This is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music (9-month faculty position) serving as Director of Bands. Primary duties will include directing the undergraduate Symphonic Band; teaching undergraduate music courses; advising and mentoring students; and providing service to the department, college, and university. Duties also include recruiting students and actively growing and promoting the band program within the university and broader community, with the goal of increasing visibility, enrollment, and participation in performances and festivals. Teaching load is 15 semester credit hours per semester (Fall, Spring). Duties also include mentoring and advising students; attending faculty meetings; teaching additional undergraduate music courses as needed; and engaging in community and professional outreach that supports recruitment and enhances the visibility of the Symphonic Band and music program. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest and most comprehensive college at the university. The Department of Fine and Performing Arts offers undergraduate programs in music, art, theatre, and dance, and emphasizes student success, community engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The successful candidate must hold an earned doctorate (DMA or PhD) in Conducting, Music Education, or a closely related field by the start of the Fall 2026 semester; demonstrated excellence in teaching and ensemble leadership; ability to direct a collegiate band; commitment to student recruitment, mentoring, and service. We strongly encourage candidates with significant experience directing collegiate bands, developing and growing instrumental programs, engaging in community and regional outreach to support recruitment, and collaborating effectively with colleagues within a comprehensive undergraduate music curriculum.

We offer competitive salaries and a benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits, and life insurance. Additional pay is available for summer teaching. Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered in whole or in part by the university.
