Lateral Pay Consideration: Candidates with prior law enforcement experience may be eligible for a higher starting wage based on qualifications and years of service. Signing Bonus: $3,000 – $5,000 depending on prior law enforcement experience, paid in installments over the first two (2) years of employment. Education Incentive: Eligible Officers may receive an education bonus ranging from $250 – $1,000 based on highest degree obtained. Instructor Incentive Pay: Eligible officers may receive $100/month for each approved law enforcement instructor certification (e.g., MCOLES, FLETC firearms instructor) Work Schedule: 12-hour shifts with every other weekend off. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Act as a Tribal Police Liaison to the community to enhance good public relations. Develop knowledge and understanding of Native American culture, language, traditions and communities, participate in Tribal Member activities and attend Tribal events that support Tribal sovereignty, culture and customs to deliver the highest standard of services. Patrol assigned areas, on foot or by motor vehicle, to include buildings and grounds, and check locked doors and windows; direct and control traffic around fires, accidents and other disruptions as needed; issue warnings and citations to drivers when violations of motor vehicles are observed; make arrests for violations of the laws. Investigate and prevent all types of crimes, civil infractions, accidents, and suspicious activity and people; Perform follow up duties on crimes/accident as directed by supervisor; interview suspects and witnesses; collect evidence and facts. Receive briefing upon arrival for duty; secure information, ask questions and participate in required departmental training and discussion. Respond to calls for service, emergency alarms and other dispatched calls; make decisions based on analysis of situation and facts. Disperse unruly crowds at public gatherings within Departmental guidelines. Render first aid at the scene of incidents, accidents, medical assistance calls, and domestic violence calls. Identify, pursue and arrest suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts. Write and file with supervisor: incident reports and daily activity reports of disturbances, accidents, crimes and tickets issued. Assist area police departments in carrying out their functions. Deliver emergency messages to citizens residing on Tribal land and help motorists with flat tires and stalled vehicles. Train new officers in the field according to established schedules and guidelines; submit evaluations of trainee performance to supervisor. Appear and truthfully and impartially testify in courts as a subpoenaed witness and/or reporting officer. Develop familiarity with the assigned areas and presence of individuals that may be living in those areas. Properly maintain issued equipment and vehicles assigned for patrol. Adhere to all safety practices applicable in performing duties. Capably interface and maintain effective relationships with Tribal Members, members of the public, and co-workers. Develop familiarity and comply with all Tribal and applicable state or local rules, regulations and codes to ensure efficient operations. Maintain and apply knowledge of drugs/narcotics, such as abuse identification and the availability on the streets as it relates to routine patrol duties and detention procedures. Perform other duties as directed/required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Possess valid MCOLES license or, if license has lapsed or inactive, reactivate immediately upon hire. Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Understand or gain knowledge of and appreciate the Native American culture and customs. Valid driver's license with good driving record; complete Emergency Vehicle Operation training in the academy and once every 3 years. CPR/First Aid certified or become certified within 90 days of hire. Complete and pass a comprehensive background investigation and drug screening in accordance with NHBP standards. Successfully completed basic recruit training and firearms qualifications. Pass approved firearms qualification courses within 1 year of hire. Possess Bureau of Indian Affairs Special Law Enforcement Commission or obtain as soon as training becomes available. Agree to and sign Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics. Pass a physical evaluation and psychological evaluation upon hire and as otherwise ordered. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Five years of Police experience.
