Job Summary:  Licensed veterinary intern responsible for providing veterinary care for owned or sheltered animals. May be responsible for performing surgeries that include dentals, spay/neuter or other soft tissue surgeries.

Summary of Essential Responsibilities:

• Performs all work in accordance with SPCA of Texas protocols.
• Humanely treats and care for all animals entrusted to the SPCA of Texas.
• Performs medical care to include, but not limited to, routine and sick examinations, preventative care, emergency triage and stabilization, heartworm treatment, dental procedures and soft tissue surgery.
• Administers and accurately monitors controlled substances.
• Maintains and completes patient records.
• Serves as mentor to technical support staff.
• Be an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas, sharing the work and mission with your friends and family and be knowledgeable of the various ways to support our work.

Summary of Essential Job Tasks:

• Must possess clear verbal and written communication skills to ensure accurate reporting of staff, animal health, or equipment concerns.
• Perform physical examinations and diagnostic/medical procedures in a way that will deliver the highest quality care within the shelter while minimizing patient stress and discomfort.
• Maintain medical standards of care as set forth by SPCA of Texas protocol.
• Be able and willing to examine, diagnose, and treat disease and injuries of shelter animals that include, but are not limited to, dogs, cats, livestock and exotics.
• Serve as a resource for the development of protocols regarding sanitary measures, feeding, disease prevention and population management.
• Understand and maintain confidentiality rules regarding all animals as set forth by SPCA of Texas protocols.
• Understand and practice ‘herd health” principles as well as individual animal care.
• Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental standard operating procedures.

Abilities Required:

• Static Strength: the ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 40 pounds.

Applicant Information:

• Applicant must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent.
• The individual performing this job may be required to work more than 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week. Shift times may vary and include weekend hours and occasional holidays.
• Licensure in good standing to practice in the state of Texas, including Texas Veterinary License and DEA license or the ability to obtain both before the start of employment.
• Applicant must provide proof of and maintain professional liability insurance.

Normally scheduled 5 days per week, 8 hours per day between the hours of 7am and 7pm.
