This unique role combines clinical pharmacy practice in Arizona with regulatory leadership as Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) for California operations. You will ensure compliance with all California Board of Pharmacy requirements while supporting patient care and operational excellence from our Arizona location.

Position Overview

The Pharmacist / California PIC plays a dual role:

1. Clinical Pharmacist (Arizona Operations)
2. • Deliver high-quality compounding pharmacy care, ensuring safety, accuracy, and exceptional patient experiences.
3. Pharmacist-in-Charge (California License Oversight)
4. • Maintain full accountability for California pharmacy licensure compliance, regulatory adherence, and operational oversight in accordance with the California Board of Pharmacy laws and regulations.
   • You are responsible for ensuring that all pharmacy systems, processes, personnel, and documentation meet California’s strict compliance standards—even while operating remotely from Arizona.

Key Responsibilities

A. Patient Interaction & Clinical Care

• Respond to patient and prescriber inquiries with professionalism and clinical accuracy

• Conduct consultations (phone) regarding medications, therapies, and compounding options

• Evaluate drug interactions and coordinate with prescribers for appropriate therapy adjustments

• Support patients with education on usage, side effects, and alternatives

B. Prescription Processing & Compounding Oversight

• Review and verify prescriptions for accuracy, appropriateness, and completeness

• Perform final verification of compounded medications (quality, formulation accuracy, pharmaceutical elegance)

• Ensure safe packaging, labeling, and dispensing

• Develop, validate, and update compounding formulas and master formulations

C. California PIC Responsibilities (Core Focus of Role)

As the designated California Pharmacist-in-Charge, you are legally responsible for ensuring the pharmacy operates in full compliance with California law.

Regulatory Compliance & Licensing

• Maintain active PIC status with the California Board of Pharmacy

• Ensure compliance with:

o California Business & Professions Code

o California Code of Regulations (Title 16)

o USP <795> , <797> , <800> standards as applicable

• Ensure non-resident pharmacy licensure requirements are continuously met

• Oversee and maintain all required California licenses, permits, and renewals

Policy, Procedure & Process Oversight

• Develop, maintain, and enforce California-compliant policies and procedures, including:

o Prescription handling and verification workflows

o Compounding processes and documentation

o Patient consultation protocols

o Drug storage, handling, and beyond-use dating

o Recall and adverse event procedures

• Conduct regular review and updates of SOPs to align with regulatory changes

Quality Assurance & Auditing

• Establish and maintain a Quality Assurance (QA) program specific to California requirements

• Perform routine internal audits to ensure:

o Accurate recordkeeping

o Proper labeling and packaging

o Compliance with compounding logs and batch records

• Ensure readiness for California Board of Pharmacy inspections at all times

• Lead responses to inspections, audits, or regulatory inquiries

Recordkeeping & Documentation

• Ensure all required California records are accurate, complete, and retrievable, including:

o Prescription records

o Compounding logs

o Sterility and potency testing records

o Patient profiles

• Maintain compliance with California retention requirements

• Oversee electronic systems for compliance accuracy

Controlled Substances & Compliance

• Ensure California compliance for:

o Controlled substance handling and documentation

o Inventory controls and reconciliation

o Loss, theft, and discrepancy reporting

• Oversee adherence to both DEA and California-specific requirements

Personnel Oversight & Training

• Ensure all staff working on California prescriptions are properly trained and compliant

• Develop and enforce training programs specific to California regulations

• Verify licensure and competency for all applicable personnel

• Promote a culture of compliance and accountability

Risk Management & Incident Response

• Investigate and document medication errors, variances, and complaints

• Implement corrective and preventive action plans (CAPA)

• Ensure proper reporting of adverse events when required

Communication & Leadership

• Serve as the primary liaison with the California Board of Pharmacy

• Provide guidance to leadership on regulatory changes and operational impact

• Support cross-functional teams to ensure compliance is embedded in daily operations

What You’ll Bring

• Active Pharmacist licenses in both Arizona and California (required)

• Eligibility and willingness to serve as California Pharmacist-in-Charge

• Strong knowledge of:

o California pharmacy law and Board regulations

o Compounding standards and best practices

• Strong communication and leadership abilities

• Demonstrated experience with compliance, audits, and regulatory inspections (preferred)
