Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (Specialist)

Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Office Chief of Systems Development, a Supervising Transportation Electrical Engineer (Manager), the incumbent, a Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer (Specialist), serves as the Division’s Subject Matter Expert (SME) on SB-960 Transportation planning for Complete Streets facilities, including transit priority facilities.

The incumbent, in partnership with District practitioners, provides technical guidance to the Division in planning and developing well maintained transportation network that offers accessible, comfortable, and convenient mobility for all users whether they are traveling by foot, bicycle, assistive mobility device, public transportation, or vehicle. This role supports the state emission reduction goals by promoting alternatives to driving and advancing the Department’s asset management strategy through frameworks for regular inspection, maintenance, and renewal of bike, pedestrian, and transit assets. The incumbent guides equitable project development by engaging under served communities in Statewide Highway Operations Program and Plan (SHOPP) funded initiatives.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid certificate of registration as an electrical engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required.

Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

1. Demonstrate your ability to collaboratively partner with a wide range of internal and external customers, including headquarters, districts, federal, state, and local agencies, vendors, researchers, and consultants, on transit-related projects.
2. Explain your experience with software tools and applications used to collect, manage, and analyze large and complex data sets to support statewide initiatives.
3. Describe a transit or complete streets project that you led, including strategies, guidelines, or policies developed.
4. Provide examples of your experience in developing and delivering presentations, facilitating town hall meetings, and conducting outreach activities to effectively communicate information and engage a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
