Position Available at Regina Coeli Parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh Director of Evangelization: A senior lay ecclesial minister in evangelization and faith formation, overseeing other ministers and collaborating closely with the pastor in the governance of a three-campus, consolidated parish Open effective August 26, 2026 Salary Range: $65,000 to $92,500, commensurate with credentials and experience Vision: While based on a recently vacated position, this posting is also partially new, and represents an effort to anticipate changes in the vision and operation of Regina Coeli Parish ("Parish") subsequent to a recent change in pastoral administration. The position is envisioned as a senior lay ecclesial ministry overseeing the ministries of evangelization and faith formation. As such, the person hired may choose also to take the title, "Pastoral Associate." A pastoral associate will enjoy the opportunities and responsibilities of that class of ecclesial ministry as regulated by the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. In either event, the Director of Evangelization ("DE") cooperates with and reports to the administrator or pastor ("pastor") in the overall care of the Parish. He or she is a senior member of the Parish staff, with comprehensive responsibility for the welfare of the Parish. Even so, DE is entrusted especially and routinely with the portfolio of responsibilities typically associated with communication, faith formation, and evangelization, and also with administration insofar as the DE will oversee other lay ecclesial ministers with subordinate portfolios. The Parish is a rust-belt-region consolidation of three immediate predecessor Parishes, including both high-end suburban enclaves and post-industrial gentrifying neighborhoods. The DE must be capable of ministry at multiple sites and in the varying cultural contexts of the Parish. This position is a full time, exempt, salaried position. As such, the DE can expect hours to be flexible, but frequently to include evenings and weekends. The DE is entitled to 10 working days annually for approved ongoing formation relevant to his or her responsibilities. Qualities Because of the high level of responsibility of this position, the DE needs to possess vision and creative adaptability. This minister amplifies and enhances the vision of the diocesan Bishop and the pastor for subordinate staff and for the faithful. The DE forms staff and recruits and forms lay collaborators from among the faithful and alters ministerial priorities in relation to progress among them. This implies the ability to relate to and appreciate a wide spectrum of people and the ability to relinquish direct control in order to enable other ministers to develop. Competencies and Skills 1. Personal Competencies: a. The candidate shall have demonstrated in previous positions a fidelity to the faith and tradition of the universal Church and shall manifest the intention to adhere in future work to the faith, tradition and discipline of the universal Church, the local diocesan Church and the Parish. The candidate should be capable of signing and complying with a Catholic Identity and Mission Clause (a.k.a., "Cardinal's Clause") for the Diocese of Pittsburgh. b. The candidate shall demonstrate a willingness to pursue continuing education. c. The candidate shall have the physical and psychological health commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and shall possess personal qualities that exhibit a prayerful spirit, maturity (both personal and spiritual), flexibility, initiative, adaptability to pastoral situations and strong interpersonal skills. In particular, the candidate should be able to sustain humane and gracious engagement with subordinate employees, the clergy and staff, lay collaborators, and the lay faithful. 2. Professional Competencies: a. The candidate shall have at least a master's degree or the equivalent education in either divinity or organizational development. In the likely event that the candidate does not hold degrees in both fields, the candidate should be able to demonstrate professional familiarity in the field in which a degree is lacking, or give evidence that he or she could do so within the first year of employment. b. The master's degree program of studies or its equivalent shall include to the greatest extent possible formal courses primarily applicable to the Catholic Church and her faith, sacraments, and governance. c. The candidate shall have formal training in leadership skills and a practicum in pastoral theology, Parish life, or some similar clinical pastoral education. d. The candidate shall have at least three years of pastoral experience with demonstrated leadership skills, administrative ability, and facility in interpersonal relationships. 3. Safe Environment for Children As with all positions in the Diocese of Pittsburgh that involve contact with children or the supervision of those who do, this ministry requires full compliance with the Safe Environment Policy of the diocese. Moreover, in view of the high level of leadership associated with this position, the DE must demonstrate active support for the policy throughout his or her ministry. Responsibilities and Tasks 1. The DE holds supervisory responsibility for major areas in Parish ministry: a. Communications, including awareness and advocacy, bulletin, signage, website, social media, and other digital media; b. Adult evangelization and discipleship, including progressive formation for adults, and the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults; c. Youth evangelization and discipleship, including youth- and middle-school-ministry, OCIC, and confirmation preparation; and d. Faith formation programs for children, families, and adults. 2. The DE oversees other lay ecclesial ministers (and their support staff) who work in these aforementioned areas and who report to the DE-roughly the equivalent of four full-time positions, but possibly more numerous insofar as these are held by part-time ministers. When circumstances among these ministers warrant, the DE may also minister directly in any of these areas, either alongside or instead of these ministers. 3. Beyond his or her own ongoing formation, the DE therefore shares with the pastor responsibility for the professional formation and development of the subordinate lay ecclesial ministers. The successful DE will see that these other ministers flourish. 4. The DE fosters a spirit of evangelization in the Parish at large, and recruits persons with appropriate gifts and vocations to co-responsible labor in communications and faith formation. The successful DE will see that such persons flourish in their collaboration. 5. The DE is mindful of the diachronic nature of his or her responsibilities. a. During the first year of employment, it is likely that the DE will play a key role in assisting the new pastor with the administrative transition and with the discernment of a new vision for the mission and operation of the Parish. b. During the second year, the DE will oversee the adaptation of existing staff into their (likely) revised positions, as determined by the envisioning process of the first year. c. During the second and subsequent years, the DE will likely be a principal partner of the pastor in the progressive implementation of the vision. d. Over time, the DE's exercise of ministry will also account for the progressive, strategic development of staff (both as individuals and as a whole), other lay collaborators, and the faithful. e. In particular, the DE will facilitate long-term development addressing key lacunae in evangelization, e.g., engagement with parents whose children have recently received a sacrament of initiation, and engagement with couples subsequent to marriage, i.e., parental and post-marital mystagogy. 6. The DE implements best practices in leadership. Thus, in collaboration with the pastor, the DE will press graciously but firmly for healthy developments in Parish culture. 7. The DE collaborates with diocesan and regional organizations, Parish clergy and staff, community organizations, volunteers, parents, and emerging leaders to arrange for programming of pastoral value in all major responsibility areas. 8. The DE maintains relevant professional affiliations. 9. The DE shares in the other duties common to the pastoral staff of the Parish-e.g., visible participation in Sunday Masses, attendance at staff meetings, cooperation in crafting and complying with a budget, and adjusting responsibilities to developing pastoral priorities. 10. The DE facilitates compliance with the Safe Environment program especially among subordinate staff and volunteers.
