About the Role

The Senior Environmental Health Specialist – PM Track, based in Chicago, IL, serves as a bridge between technical fieldwork and project leadership. This role is built for an experienced environmental health, industrial hygiene, or EHS professional who is ready to grow into independent project management—gaining hands-on exposure to client engagement, proposal development, budgeting, scheduling, and report preparation while continuing to apply deep technical expertise in the field.

You will work alongside senior Project Managers on projects spanning asbestos, lead, mold, industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, and broader Environmental Health & Safety disciplines. A significant portion of the role may involve asbestos-related fieldwork, including site surveys, abatement oversight, construction monitoring, documentation, and support for regulatory-compliance activities.

On the ground, you will conduct site surveys and inspections, oversee abatement activities, and monitor job sites for safety and regulatory compliance. Behind the scenes, you will contribute to the full project lifecycle—from scoping and proposals to final deliverables, invoicing, and client follow-up.

This is a role for someone who thrives in both a hard hat and a client meeting and is eager to develop the leadership skills to run complex environmental health and EHS projects independently.

Responsibilities

Operational and Project Coordination

• Attend job walks, pre-construction meetings, project meetings, and client meetings.
• Assist in preparing proposals, project budgets, scopes of work, schedules, and deliverables.
• Review project scope and help define work plans, milestones, staffing needs, and client expectations.
• Respond to client inquiries with professionalism, responsiveness, and technical knowledge.
• Review project drawings, plans, specifications, and applicable project documentation.
• Open new projects, including intake forms, scheduling, staff assignments, and project setup.
• Monitor project budgets, staff activity, quality, scope, turnaround times, billing rates, and client interactions.
• Track project milestones and communicate project-status updates to internal teams and clients.
• Review staff time entries for accuracy and support timely project administration.
• Verify laboratory turnaround times and work-in-progress charges.
• Coordinate equipment needs, including rental, borrowing, selection, calibration, and readiness.
• Audit work-in-progress charges weekly and flag discrepancies or issues.
• Prepare and review project reports, client deliverables, and project documentation.
• Follow invoicing procedures and support billing and collections activities, as needed.
• Enter time, expenses, milestones, and project updates in Clearview.
• Maintain organized and complete electronic project files.
• Set and track personal operational and professional-development goals with your supervisor.

Field and Technical Responsibilities

• Conduct environmental health field investigations, surveys, inspections, assessments, and monitoring activities.
• Support asbestos-related projects through site surveys, inspections, abatement oversight, work-practice monitoring, field documentation, and coordination with clients, contractors, and laboratories, as assigned.
• Monitor active job sites for safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and adherence to project scope.
• Assist with lead, mold, industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, and other EHS-related projects, based on project needs and qualifications.
• Verify and document equipment calibration and maintain accurate field records.
• Maintain required training, certifications, and technical qualifications applicable to assigned work.
• Follow all FACS, client-site, and applicable safety, environmental health, and regulatory requirements.

Business Development and Client Service

• Log and conduct customer-service and outreach calls.
• Participate in client presentations, meetings, industry events, and association activities.
• Identify and refer business opportunities to appropriate team members.
• Support the development of marketing materials, including proposals, qualifications packages, project summaries, and presentations.
• Build productive, professional relationships with clients, contractors, project partners, and internal team members.

Team Development and Quality

• Attend internal FACS University and external training opportunities.
• Support mentorship and on-the-job development of junior staff.
• Participate in QA/QC reviews, technical audits, and continuous-improvement efforts.
• Assist with recruiting new staff, as needed.
• Learn Client Resources Manager responsibilities and other operational functions that support successful project delivery.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Biological Science, Physical Science, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
• Minimum 3 years of field experience in asbestos, lead, mold, industrial hygiene, EHS, construction safety, or related environmental consulting disciplines.
• Experience working in field-based environments such as construction, renovation, abatement, commercial, institutional, industrial, healthcare, public-sector, or occupied-building settings is strongly preferred.
• Strong time-management, prioritization, organization, and multitasking skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare accurate reports and communicate professionally with clients and project teams.
• Ability to build effective working relationships with clients, contractors, laboratories, and colleagues.
• Ability and willingness to travel to project sites throughout the Chicago area and surrounding region.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn project-management and operational systems, including Clearview.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet client-site and company requirements, as applicable.

Licenses and Certifications

Certifications must be current and applicable to the work performed.

Preferred, but not required:

• Direct asbestos inspection, abatement oversight, construction monitoring, or related field experience.
• Current Illinois asbestos credentials applicable to assigned work, such as Asbestos Worker, Supervisor, Inspector, Project Manager, Project Designer, or Air Sampling Professional.
• Lead, mold, industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, construction safety, or broader EHS credentials.
• CIH — Certified Industrial Hygienist.
• CSP — Certified Safety Professional.
• CHST — Construction Health and Safety Technician.
• OHST — Occupational Health and Safety Technologist.

Work Environment

This is a field-forward role requiring regular travel to client and project sites in Chicago and the surrounding area. Depending on project needs, work may take place in active construction, renovation, abatement, industrial, commercial, institutional, healthcare, public-sector, or occupied-building environments.

The successful candidate must be willing and able to:

• Use required personal protective equipment and follow all applicable client-site and company safety protocols.
• Participate in required training, including respiratory-protection medical clearance and fit testing when assigned work requires it.
• Work in varying site conditions, including indoor and outdoor environments, active construction areas, mechanical spaces, and other field settings.
• Walk, stand, climb stairs, access work areas, and carry or transport standard field equipment as needed.
• Work occasional early-morning, evening, or off-hours schedules when project timing, building access, shutdown windows, or client needs require it.
