Accounting Consultant

Contract: 3–6 months initially, with potential for extension

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Accounting Consultant to provide hands-on support across the organizations accounting and financial reporting function, with a particular focus on strengthening the monthly close process, internal controls, account reconciliations, technical accounting documentation, and audit readiness.

This consultant will assess the current accounting close, address identified findings, and implement improvements to ensure a more accurate, controlled, and timely close process. The role will also support analysis of prior-period accounting activity and preparation of key technical accounting position papers required by the organizations auditors.

The ideal consultant will have operated at a Senior Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, Controller, or senior accounting consulting level and will bring substantial experience owning complex accounting closes and supporting external audits.

A background within a nonprofit or similarly complex organization would be particularly valuable, especially experience involving gifts or contributions, entity consolidation, restricted funding, and technically complex accounting matters.

This role is best suited to someone who can quickly assess an accounting environment, identify where processes or controls are breaking down, get directly into the underlying accounts and reconciliations, and leave behind a stronger and more sustainable close process.

Qualifications & Experience

• Significant accounting experience with deep expertise in month-end and year-end close processes.
• Strong understanding of GAAP, general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
• Demonstrated experience assessing and improving accounting processes and internal controls.
• Experience addressing external audit findings and implementing associated remediation plans.
• Strong technical accounting capabilities with experience researching accounting issues and preparing formal accounting position papers or technical memoranda.
• Experience with consolidation accounting and other complex or judgmental accounting matters.
• Strong understanding of prior-period adjustments and journal entries, including the ability to assess and document historical financial statement impacts.
• Experience working directly with external auditors and managing audit requests and supporting documentation.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to investigate accounting discrepancies and work through complex historical transactions.
• Ability to operate independently and provide both strategic recommendations and hands-on accounting support.
• Excellent attention to detail, documentation, project management, and stakeholder communication skills.
