Quality Improvement Director – Behavioral Health Service Line This role leads the quality department, elevating high reliability in clinical performance through assessment of performance, prioritisation of improvement activities, and overseeing quality improvement projects within Banner Health’s Behavioral Health units. Position Summary This position leads the Quality Department. It elevates high reliability in clinical performance through assessment of performance, ensures prioritization of improvement activities, oversees performance improvement projects, and ensures successful clinical project implementation at operating entities. The role prioritizes clinical improvement activities, oversees facilitation of performance improvement teams, and successful implementation to achieve entity/system targets. It works closely with both system and operating entities to improve quality and outcomes of clinical care. This role requires strong communication, collaboration, teamwork, and change management skills to achieve desired results across the continuum of care. Core Functions Quality Leadership and Integration – Lead the integration of quality into the fabric of the organization to achieve objectives such as Annual Initiatives, CMS and The Joint Commission standards of care. Directs and supports the quality infrastructure, protects the use of privileged or confidential information, oversees facilitation of processes for engagement and interprofessional teamwork, identifies and promotes continuous learning. Collaborates with administrators, physicians, clinical leaders and team members to identify improvement opportunities utilizing qualitative and quantitative data analysis. Performance and Process Improvement – Serve as a subject matter expert in performance and process improvement, project management, and change management methods to support operational and clinical quality initiatives. Manage, coach, and oversee facilitation of improvement activities related to patient safety, harm reduction, clinical performance opportunities, peer review, and compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies. Population Health and Care Transitions – Direct evaluation and improvement of healthcare processes and care transitions to advance safe and effective care of defined populations. Direct implementation of evidence‑based Population Health management strategies, encourage holistic improvement, collaborate to improve care processes, and monitor and report facility Clinical Practice performance. Health Data Analytics – Leverage the organization’s analytic environment to guide data‑driven decision making and inform quality improvement initiatives while overseeing and guiding quality improvement activities. Ensure acquisition and integration of data from internal and external benchmarking sources, use statistical and visualization methods to analyze data, and identify performance improvement opportunities. Patient Safety – Cultivate a safe healthcare environment by promoting safe practices, nurturing a Just Culture, and improving processes that detect, mitigate or prevent harm. Serve as an advocate for safety culture, ensuring the application of safety science principles, and facilitate teams to improve safety processes. Regulatory and Accreditation – Direct evaluation, monitoring, and improvement of compliance with internal and external requirements. Oversee processes to prepare for, participate in, and follow up with regulatory agencies and certifications, ensuring continuous survey readiness and overseeing PI survey processes and findings. Quality Review and Accountability – Serve as a subject matter expert in compliance with voluntary, mandatory, and contractual reporting requirements for data acquisition, analysis, reporting, and process improvement. Develop and communicate measurement requirements and support peer review activities. Professional Engagement – Engage in the healthcare quality profession with a commitment to practicing ethically, enhancing competencies, and advancing the field by participating in professional organizations and achieving certification in healthcare quality. Oversight and Management – Responsibilities cross all levels of internal customers, oversee and manage the department budget and productivity, and manage QI at single or multiple entities while contributing to system‑level QI activities. Minimum Qualifications Requires a Master’s degree or current enrollment in a Master’s program with an anticipated graduation within one year of hire, or equivalent experience. Requires a proficiency level typically attained with five years acute care clinical experience, at least two years of management experience, or demonstrated leadership abilities through successful large‑scale projects. Requires ability to perform complex statistical analysis and highly developed problem‑solving skills, as well as the ability to manage programs and projects, and demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and written communication. Requires Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) certification or Certified Professional Patient Safety (CPPS) certification within 6 months of hire. For individuals in this role prior to June 1, 2025, CPHQ or CPPS must be obtained within 1 year. Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, and BUMG, BUMCT, or BUMCS in a Behavioral Health clinical setting that serves children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of employment, and an Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire. Preferred Qualifications Registered Nurse (RN) license preferred. Experience with process improvement, regulatory/accreditation programs, data management, and analysis including graphic development and presentations is highly desirable.
