Job Description
- The Area Manager (Repair) oversees repair and new construction activities within an assigned area of a shipyard, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of work. This role coordinates planning, scheduling, and resource allocation across multiple trades and subcontractors, while monitoring performance against schedule and budget and driving continuous improvement in processes and outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the creation and refinement of new construction and repair policies and procedures in collaboration with skilled leadership.
- Understand and manage shipwide safety and housekeeping standards, ensuring goals are consistently met in the assigned area.
- Participate in logistical planning and execution for the assigned area, including coordination of materials, equipment, and workforce.
- Participate in quality and process improvement initiatives by identifying problem areas and initiating corrective actions.
- Coordinate material and equipment protection within the assigned area to prevent damage and ensure readiness for use.
- Coordinate production and test schedules and ensure that all requirements, milestones, and goals are achieved in the assigned area.
- Monitor trade activities in the assigned area and provide timely input to ship management and supervision to initiate appropriate action when needed.
- Coordinate the resolution of conflicting priorities between trades and subcontractors to maintain schedule and workflow.
- Monitor schedule and budget deviations in the assigned area and coordinate with ship management and supervision to initiate corrective actions.
- Participate in the development of management zone work strategies, plans, and sequencing with support from planning, support departments, and trade supervision.
- Provide consistent feedback and recommendations to improve execution on follow-on hulls and availabilities.
- Exercise discretion and independent judgment by anticipating potential schedule and budget issues and proactively initiating corrective measures.
- Provide structured feedback, including lessons learned and documentation such as engineering change notices and issue reports, to management, planning, and support departments.
- Perform all job responsibilities in alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, values, and guiding principles.
- Understand and administer NAVSEA Standard Items for repair work, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and requirements.
- Perform other related responsibilities and duties as assigned to support overall shipyard and project objectives.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent, with solid knowledge of trade responsibilities, ship systems, and shipbuilding or ship repair practices.
- Two (2) years of experience in a shipbuilding, ship repair, or equivalent manufacturing environment is desired.
- Demonstrated supervisory skills with the ability to lead and direct trade and repair activities in an assigned area.
- Experience in ship repair project management or area management within an industrial or maritime environment.
- Strong project management capabilities, including planning, scheduling, and coordinating multiple trades and subcontractors.
- Proven management skills with the ability to monitor performance, anticipate issues, and implement corrective actions.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear, effective reports as a key deliverable.
- Effective team-building skills, with the ability to foster collaboration across trades, planning, and support departments.
- Successfully demonstrated knowledge of organizational policies and procedures and the ability to apply them consistently.
- Ability to understand and administer NAVSEA Standard Items for repair work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Prior supervisory experience in shipbuilding, ship repair, or a comparable manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Experience coordinating logistics, including materials and equipment, in a complex industrial setting.
- Proficiency in quality and process improvement, including identifying issues and implementing corrective actions.
- Experience working closely with planning, support departments, and trade supervision to develop work strategies and sequences.
- Familiarity with documenting lessons learned and contributing to continuous improvement for follow-on projects or hulls.

Work Environment
- This role is based at a shipyard facility, working in and around active shipbuilding and ship repair operations. The environment includes industrial production areas, onboard ship spaces, and outdoor yard settings, where you will regularly interact with multiple trades, contractors, and support departments. Work involves coordinating activities in a dynamic, schedule-driven setting that requires attention to safety, housekeeping, and compliance with shipyard procedures and NAVSEA standards. Hours may align with typical shipyard shifts and production schedules, with the need to be present on-site to oversee operations and respond to evolving project needs.
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Diego, CA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
