Middle School Humanities Teacher – Long Term Sub Supervisor: Head of Middle School FLSA Designation: Exempt Calendar: 10 month General Summary McDonogh School is searching for a long term substitute to cover middle school humanities classes starting in the fall of 2026, typically a 12‑week placement. The ideal candidate will help students grow, think deeply, make connections, embrace diverse perspectives, engage in meaningful learning, and develop an understanding of culture and humanity. This teacher will join a community of committed, passionate, and innovative teachers and students. Essential Functions Inspire, engage, and encourage students in the study of English and history as they develop as readers, writers, critical thinkers, and effective researchers. Serve as an advisor, contributing to the academic, behavioral, and social‑emotional growth of adolescents. Work collaboratively with colleagues inside and outside the Humanities departments. Use professional growth opportunities to continually refine practice. Respond to the needs of the School, including but not limited to service learning, coaching, assigned duties, and other areas as determined by the Middle School Head. Recommended Employment Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in English or Social Studies, or a teaching degree in secondary education with an emphasis in English, Social Studies, or Language Arts is required. Additional Experience Demonstrated ability to collaborate and create engaging interdisciplinary units, projects, and willingness to research historical or related subjects to create interdisciplinary units. Experience working in a student‑centered learning environment, with practical experience with problem‑and project‑based learning, as well as integrated learning. Prior experience teaching middle school language arts. Prior experience teaching social studies or humanities. Understanding of grammar and mechanics. Additional Requirements Ability to both learn from and encourage continual growth in a highly motivated faculty. Ability to comply with background check, including fingerprints, as required by the agency and/or state regulations. Ability to embrace diverse perspectives and highlight diverse experiences. Ability to generate and facilitate civil discourse in the classroom. Ability to successfully work with and within a culturally and academically diverse student body, staff, and community. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Working Conditions Evening and weekend hours may be required from time to time. Lifting and carrying of equipment is not typical, but may be required on rare occasions; lifting up to 25 pounds. The position involves climbing stairs, walking around campus, sitting, standing, and significant computer use, including extensive close use of a computer monitor.
