Psychiatrist (Mental Health Intensive Case Management)

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic qualifications and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Candidates with pending training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a VA‑approved school. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, or Commonwealth or in Washington, D.C. Residency training: must have completed an ACGME or AOA‑accredited core specialty program leading to board certification; or one year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice; or a foreign residency program followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. (U.S. fellowships are creditable). Residents in accredited programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent basis under a defined scope of practice. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred experience: outpatient care with patients with serious mental illness (SMI). Reference for this qualification standard: . Physical requirements: pre‑employment physical; ability to lift 15–44 pounds; push, pull, and reach above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walk and stand 3–5 hours; rapid mental and muscular coordination; near vision correctable to 13–16 inches (20/40 in one eye and 20/20 in the other); hearing aid permitted. Duties Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm with required on‑call rotation including nights, weekends, and holidays. EDRP authorized: former participants are ineligible for incentive. Salary and benefits: competitive base salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases, 50–55 days PTO per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid absence for CME); traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% employer match; comprehensive federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care insurance (many programs transferable to retirement). Licensure: one full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory. CME reimbursement: possible $1,000 per year (full‑time with board certification). Malpractice: free liability protection with tail coverage. No employment contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting. Role: Treat a panel of patients with serious mental illness engaged in the MHICM program; coordinate care with case managers; serve as psychiatrist for patients in the Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center; act as subject matter expert on complex SMI treatments (e.g., long‑acting injectables, clozapine). Clinical duties: conduct assessments, gather history, perform mental status exams, order necessary labs and imaging, formulate diagnoses, and provide psychiatric care per privileges; teach required services to residents; deliver educational experiences to medical students, psychology interns, social work interns, physician assistants, nursing students, and non‑psychiatry residents. Administrative responsibilities: complete performance measures, maintain timely documentation, participate in departmental and hospital committees, and contribute to continuous quality improvement through peer review. Supervision: assist residents and nurse practitioners in evaluation and treatment of psychiatric patients; provide timely documentation in the electronic record; cosign resident notes; supervise residents in electroconvulsive therapy and other procedures; maintain a 40‑hour work week and scheduled on‑call rotation.
