What You’ll Do:

Support Patient Access & Experience (Registration & Coordination)

• Welcome students and manage check-in and check-out processes using electronic medical records (EMR) systems
• Verify insurance coverage, confirm eligibility, and collect payments when needed
• Schedule appointments for new and returning student patients
• Assist with prior authorizations and referral coordination
• Partner with clinical teams to ensure smooth patient flow and efficient operations

Deliver High-Quality Clinical Support

• Take medical histories and record vital signs
• Prepare patients for exams and explain procedures clearly and compassionately
• Assist providers during examinations and treatments
• Collect and process laboratory specimens; perform basic lab testing
• Administer medications and support prescription processes as directed
• Perform clinical tasks such as phlebotomy, EKGs, dressing changes, and suture/staple removal
• Prepare patients for diagnostic testing including X-rays and other procedures
• Maintain sterile environments and properly handle medical instruments and supplies
• Educate students on care plans and support their understanding of treatment instructions
• Provide general information about Student Health services and direct patients appropriately
• Collaborate with clinics and ancillary services to support continuity of care

What You Bring:

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant (AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA)

Preferred Qualifications

• Graduation from a Medical Assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
• Experience in a healthcare or ambulatory care setting
• Experience in college health or student health environments
• AAMA certification preferred
• Strong patient interaction and communication skills
• Team collaboration and cultural sensitivity
• Ability to multitask with attention to detail
• Proficiency in Epic or similar medical systems
• Clinical competencies including vital signs, phlebotomy, EKGs, and basic lab procedures
• Knowledge of healthcare regulations and clinical protocols

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $20.00 to USD $25.39. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
