Part Time Instructional Assistant – Intermediate School (Grades 3–5) Job Description Position: 3–5 Instructional Assistant (Part Time) FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt Reports to: Teacher / Principal Purpose: Provide support to the teacher in the instruction of students. This position is responsible to the classroom teacher and/or school administrators and will carry out such duties as determined by and in support of those teachers. A wide variety of tasks are performed to support the teacher in the teaching‑learning process for students. Major Duties and Responsibilities Give group instruction and provide individualized instruction as prescribed by teacher. Praise and reinforce student achievement. Report student progress to teacher. Serve as substitute teacher. Arrange classroom furnishings and equipment. Prepare visual aids and duplicate materials. Reorganize materials at the end of day. Serve as proctor during testing. Morning and afternoon carpool duties. Lunch and recess monitoring. Classroom monitoring and classroom management. Monitor work assigned by teacher. Individual student support and tutoring. Check and correct students' work while in progress and keep students on task. Instructional preparation/support. Distribute and collect instructional materials. Complete and organize paperwork and other support documents. Plan and prepare for instructional activities with the classroom teacher; contribute to a positive classroom environment where every child is motivated to achieve. Assist in escorting and supervising students to other locations. Assist teacher with non‑instructional classroom duties such as snack, lunch, bulletin boards, and daily routines. Secure and organize classroom supplies. Assist in reading, storytelling, calendar, and other appropriate activities. Assist small groups of students in library, art class, computer lab, etc. as needed. Prepare instructional materials. Participate in appropriate in‑service activities. Assist with classroom discipline. Attend school meetings as directed. Observe student performance and assist students in correcting seat work as it is being done. Assist the teacher in maintaining the classroom in a clean, orderly, and functional condition. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others. Perform other tasks and assume responsibilities as assigned by teacher or administrator. Strive to be a desirable example for students in attitude, actions, speech, and dress. Perform any other assigned duties. Additional Expectations Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Keyboarding skills with accuracy at the necessary speed. Computer skills with word processing, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing applications. Knowledge of office practices and procedures. Ability to compile and summarize information. Ability to resolve problem situations with sound judgment. Ability to demonstrate proper telephone etiquette. Ability to maintain confidentiality relating to the school system. Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments. Knowledge of business letter writing and memos. Ability to compose correspondences independently. Ability to work in the absence of supervision. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Desired Training and Hands‑On Experience High school diploma or equivalent degree. Board may allow appropriate alternatives. Minimum Qualifications or Standards Physical Requirements: Position requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects. Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to parents, students, and staff. Intelligence: Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form. Verbal Aptitude: Record and deliver information, explain procedures, follow written and oral instructions. Must communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English. Numerical Aptitude: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Motor Coordination: Coordinate eyes and hands to use keyboard. Interpersonal Temperament: Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must adapt to perform under minimal to moderate stress. Physical Communication: Ability to talk, write, and hear. Assessment: Performance assessed annually in accordance with Board’s policy on assessment of administrative personnel.
