Position Summary The Director of Nursing (DON) ensures the health, safety, and well-being of participants and staff by providing appropriate professional medical support. The DON is responsible for managing nursing operations, supervising medical personnel, maintaining compliance with applicable regulations, and promoting a high standard of compassionate, person-centered care. The Director of Nursing collaborates closely with Program Leadership, families, physicians, and other healthcare providers to support an inclusive and safe experience. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Direct all nursing and healthcare operations throughout the year, including fall/spring weekend retreats, summer camps, and clubs. In conjunction with The Woodlands’ Medical Director and Senior Director of Operations, develop, implement, and evaluate healthcare policies and procedures as needed. Ensure delivery of quality nursing care consistent with best practices and regulatory standards. Oversee health assessments, medication administration, treatments, and emergency medical response. Participate in prospective participant intake interviews, review participant medical histories, and assess appropriate criteria for participation with or without 1:1 support. Staff Supervision Recruit, orient, schedule, supervise, and evaluate part-time nursing staff. Provide leadership, mentoring, and ongoing clinical education via professional development sessions. Ensure appropriate staffing levels for all residential/day camp programs. Serve as the primary clinical resource for nurses, counselors, and program staff. Medication Management Oversee secure storage, documentation, administration, and disposal of medications. Ensure compliance with state nursing regulations and medication administration standards. Conduct regular medication audits and quality assurance reviews. Participant Health & Safety Provide onsite medical support for program participants. Promote preventative healthcare practices throughout camp. Respond to medical emergencies and coordinate emergency care when necessary. Maintain infection prevention and control protocols. Monitor communicable illnesses and implement appropriate precautions. Collaboration Partner with the Senior Director of Operations, and Program Leadership Team regarding participant health concerns. Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, physicians, pharmacies, and healthcare providers. Research and form partnerships with educational organizations and hospital systems to create a pipeline for volunteer and training opportunities related to healthcare at The Woodlands. Documentation & Compliance Maintain accurate medical records and confidential health information. Ensure compliance with HIPAA (where applicable), state nursing regulations, accreditation standards, and organization policies. In conjunction with Program Leadership, prepare reports regarding incidents, injuries, illnesses, and quality improvement activities. Participate in regulatory inspections and accreditation reviews. Training Provide health and safety education for all seasonal camp staff, including medication awareness, infection control, seizure response, anaphylaxis response, and emergency procedures. Provide specific training for Seasonal Healthcare Associates on medication distribution, policies and procedures. Conduct healthcare orientation before each programmatic season, as well as provide periodic education to seasonal and full-time staff on specific health care needs topics. Quality Improvement Evaluate healthcare services and identify opportunities for improvement. Develop risk management strategies. Participate in post-season evaluations and planning. Qualifications Required Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing. Minimum of three to five years of nursing experience. Previous supervisory or leadership experience. Current CPR and First Aid certification. Act 33/34, Act 73 Clearances Strong clinical assessment and emergency response skills. Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership abilities. Ability to work in a fast-paced, outdoor camp environment. Preferred Experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Pediatric, rehabilitation, school nursing, or camp nursing experience. Knowledge of ADA accommodations and person-centered care practices. Physical Requirements Ability to walk throughout campus, including uneven terrain. Ability to lift and transfer up to 50 pounds with assistance when appropriate. Ability to respond quickly to emergencies. Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions. Ability to stand, bend, reach, and perform repetitive clinical tasks. Work Environment Residential or day camp setting. Schedule varies depending on programmatic time of year but frequently includes various weekends and evenings, as well as some on-call responsibilities during camp sessions to respond to urgent situations via phone. Regular interaction with campers requiring varying levels of medical and personal assistance. Outdoor environment with exposure to heat, rain, insects, and other seasonal conditions.
