About the Position: You will perform depot-level overhauls, diagnostic troubleshooting, and repairs on complex diesel-electric and GEN-SET locomotives, rail cranes, and Maintenance of Way (MOW) equipment. You will interpret advanced engineering blueprints, fabricate replacement parts, and use precision diagnostic tools to ensure mission-ready operational status. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Read established wiring diagrams to trace and repair electrical circuits on Railroad Maintenance of Way (MOW) equipment. Follow manufacturer instruction manuals to perform scheduled maintenance and replace damaged components on heavy diesel-powered truck-tractors and semi-trailers. Calibrate electrically operated gauges and uses specialized mechanic tools to isolate system failures on power generators. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Trouble Shooting Use of Measuring Instruments Physical Efforts: Lifts, carries, and pulls parts of units, test equipment, and tools weighing up to 45 pounds. Lifting devices are available for heavier items. Kneels, stoops, crouches, and stands for long periods of time. Climbs ladders or reaches above head to work on components and assemblies. Required to drive and/or ride in semi tractor-trailers or panel vans for extended periods of time. Working Conditions: Works inside shops, generator enclosures, control units, and frequently outside. Subject to fumes, extremes of weather conditions, and occasionally is in close proximity to high-voltage lines and equipment. Subject to serious injury or death by contact with high-voltage lines and to less serious cuts and bruises when handling tools and materials.
