Overview The Medical Assistant Certified’s primary function is to prepare patients for their office visit by obtaining and documenting vital signs and medical history, and to provide assistance and support to the professional health care provider and/or nursing staff. This position is responsible for tasks delegated including medication administration, procedure set-up, assistance and follow-through, administration of ordered treatments, and team cooperation. This role provides patient care support duties and clerical duties to assist with patient flow. Job Specific Competencies Clinical Processes Disposing of biohazardous materials Practicing standard precautions Performing aseptic procedures Preparing for and assisting in sterile procedures Taking vital signs Preparing patients for examination Intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections Observing and reporting patients’ signs or symptoms Capillary blood withdrawal and venipuncture Obtaining specimens for microbiological testing Instructing patients in proper technique to collect urine and fecal specimens Diagnostic testing Tests waived under the federal clinical laboratory improvement amendments program Patient Care Telephone and in-person screening limited to intake and information gathering Maintaining medical and immunization records; obtaining vital signs and medication information Preparing and maintaining examination and treatment areas; restocking exam rooms Assisting with routine and specialty examinations, procedures, treatments, and minor office surgeries using local anesthetic Facilitating organized patient flow and supporting rapid response to patient needs Managing test results and patient tracking; entering patients into recall plans Administration of medications including eye drops, topical ointments, and vaccines (as directed by a health care practitioner) Reception Duties Greets patients and visitors; handles calls; performs general administrative duties Makes appointments per protocols and schedules Assists with other duties as assigned; starts shift on time; follows safety policies Demonstrates professional conduct, cultural sensitivity, and alignment with organizational values General Duties and Responsibilities Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. Certified Medical Assistant diploma from an accredited college or one year (60 credits) of post-secondary education (including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, asepsis, microbiology) required. Certification/Licensure : Must hold Medical Assistant-Certified or Interim license on hire; must obtain Medical Assistant-Certified license within one year; current Healthcare Provider CPR required. Experience : One year in a clinic or health care facility providing direct patient care preferred; demonstrates competency and meets minimum requirements of a Medical Assistant. Essential Technical/Motor Skills : Strong organizational skills; data entry; clear communication; good eye/hand/foot coordination; basic computer skills; ability to enter data; manual dexterity; accurate spelling.
