Safety Specialist

- JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
- Responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive safety program in compliance with regulatory and accreditation agencies to include both hospital-based and off-site locations. In collaboration with department managers and safety committee members, establishes processes and goals for a system-wide safety program, as well as monitoring the program for compliance and evaluating the effectiveness of the program.
- DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
- The Employee Health & Safety (EH&S) department supports the protection, promotion, and advancement of the health, safety, and well-being of SHS employees through injury prevention, evidence-based occupational health practices, wellness promotion, and regulatory excellence, enabling SHS employees to thrive and provide outstanding patient care.
- EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or a related field required.
- Certification as a Healthcare Safety Professional required within two (2) years of hire.
- Two (2) years experience in safety, risk management, or a related field required.
- Two (2) years experience with occupational safety or health regulatory compliance and accreditation standards required.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint, required.
- Experience or training in project management preferred.
- Experience in web/cloud-based systems, databases, and reporting/analytic platforms preferred.
- Experience in the healthcare industry, specifically occupational health or safety, preferred.
- KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Safety and Security - Knowledge of safety and security practices and procedures. Ability to instruct the public in and promote safe and secure operations.
- Quality Control - Knowledge of analysis, tests and inspections of products, services, or processes. Ability to evaluate quality or performance.
- Compliance - Ability to evaluate information to determine compliance with laws, regulations, or standards. Use knowledge and judgment skills to determine whether events or processes comply.
- Communication - Effective written and oral communication skills to explain complex issues, exchange information between team members, and tactfully discuss issues. Ability to perform group presentations and listen to and understand complex information and ideas.
- Time Management - Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work to complete within required time frames and to follow-up on pending issues. Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in dynamic fast-paced environments and under pressure.
- Systems Analysis / Evaluation - Knowledge of how a system works and how changes will affect outcomes. Ability to identify measures of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance to meet certain goals.
