Major Gifts Officer

The Major Gifts Officer identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards high‑net‑worth individuals, families, corporations, and foundations capable of making major and leadership‑level charitable contributions (typically $10,000–$1M+). The role manages a portfolio of qualified prospects and donors, develops personalized engagement strategies, and closes gifts that directly support hospital priorities, including patient services, equipment, facilities, and programs of excellence. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree required; Master's or CFRE preferred Experience: 3–7 years of major gifts fundraising with five and six figure success; healthcare experience preferred Licensure/Certification: N/A Skills & Competencies Proven track record of securing five and six figure gifts Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team Familiarity with donor databases – Donor Perfect CRM system for fundraising Physical & Mental Requirements Word processing (WordPerfect or Microsoft Word) Editing and proofing skills Excel spreadsheets and Donor Perfect Ability to relate to individuals from a variety of socio‑economic backgrounds Ability to negotiate effectively and gain cooperation from others to ensure a common direction of the overall program Excellent oral and communication skills Environmental and Working Conditions Position requires simple manipulative skills such as typing, eye‑hand coordination and ability to sit for prolonged periods of time Should be independent in mobility skills and able to hear normal sounds with some background noise as in telephone use Position requires ability to concentrate on details with some interruptions, moderate attention span, conceptualization skills and ability to remember multiple tasks over long periods of time Employees may be constantly exposed to electro‑magnetic radiation with use of computers Office based with local travel for donor engagement Job Duties Contribute to the achievement of the mission and values of the hospital. Initiate contact with supervisor when problems arise. Participate in department/program meetings, provide constructive input, and consult with supervisor if unable to attend. Provide a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and coworkers. Adhere to Environment of Care plans and make safety recommendations. Assess environment for safety hazards and eliminate or report hazards. Use proper body mechanics and ergonomics to prevent injury. Attend all mandatory hospital-wide education and training on regulations and guidelines. Perform responsibilities in compliance with all policies, state and federal statutes, and guidelines while maintaining cost efficiency. Contribute ideas for improving department efficiency and ethics. Major Gifts Strategy & Fundraising Develop and implement comprehensive major gift strategies aligned with hospital fundraising goals, clinical priorities, and long‑term strategic plans. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors capable of making gifts at the $10,000–$50,000+ level, including capital and planned gifts. Create individualized cultivation and solicitation plans, including timing and messaging. Prepare and present written gift proposals and cases for support linked to patient care impact. Build long‑term relationships grounded in trust and donor intent. Develop stewardship plans demonstrating philanthropic impact. Ensure timely acknowledgement, recognition, and fulfillment of donor intent. Coordinate donor recognition and naming agreements per policy. Work independently and creatively to match donor interests with institutional priorities, develop funding proposals, and negotiate structure. Manage a portfolio of approximately 75–100 major gift prospects and donors. Qualify new prospects through research, patient leads, referrals, and analytics. Schedule, conduct, and document donor interactions. Establish annual fundraising and activity goals and track progress. Partner with executives and board members to engage donors. Participate in joint solicitations and donor visits. Support capital campaigns, grateful patient programs, and associate giving. Coordinate donor events, tours, and recognition activities. Work cooperatively and collaboratively with others and accept directions from supervisor. Contribute to campaign planning and prospect strategies. Maintain accurate donor records and CRM documentation. Comply with HIPAA and healthcare fundraising regulations. Uphold ethical fundraising standards and confidentiality.
