Maintenance Mechanic I

Join a food manufacturing maintenance team responsible for keeping canning and processing equipment running safely and reliably during peak production. This hands-on role inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, fabricates, welds, installs, and adjusts plant machinery, then supports equipment overhaul and installation work outside the production season.

The best fit has at least one year of hands-on mechanical maintenance experience, can read prints and manuals, and is comfortable using shop tools, welding equipment, and basic PLC troubleshooting in an industrial setting. Food manufacturing experience is valuable, but candidates from other production plants, machine shops, automotive, agricultural equipment, heavy equipment, construction, or the military can be considered when their skills transfer.

Location: Gillett, WI

Pay Rate: $27-35 depending on skill set/industry experience

Shift:

  • Pack Season is July-October- During pack season, plant coverage typically includes 12-hour day or night shifts on a 7-days-on/1-day-off rotation, a mid-season shift change, and significant overtime. Candidates must be comfortable with seasonal schedule intensity.
  • Off pack is November-June and is traditional Day shift 4 x 10s.

Work Setting: Onsite

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain food processing, canning, conveying, packaging, and facility equipment.
  • Respond to equipment issues during production and make safe adjustments that restore performance and protect product flow.
  • Replace worn or failed mechanical components such as bearings, chains, sprockets, belts, rollers, motors, gearboxes, pumps, valves, and related machine parts as assigned.
  • Read sketches, blueprints, equipment manuals, and diagrams to plan and complete work accurately.
  • Design, fabricate, weld, and install equipment, guards, brackets, piping, and machine components as required.
  • Use MIG and TIG welders, torch-cutting equipment, hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and document repairs and completed PM work accurately.
  • Monitor operating equipment and make necessary mechanical or process adjustments.
  • Create purchase-order requests for needed parts and maintenance supplies.
  • Assist with training new or junior mechanics and share safe work practices.
  • Support equipment overhaul, installation, and improvement projects during non-production periods.
  • Maintain clean work areas and follow all food-safety, quality, environmental, and plant-safety requirements.
  • Perform other maintenance duties assigned by plant leadership.

Qualifications

  • At least one year of related mechanical repair, equipment maintenance, industrial, agricultural, automotive, construction, military, machine-shop, or comparable hands-on experience.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical troubleshooting and equipment maintenance.
  • Basic PLC exposure and the ability to use PLC information as part of equipment troubleshooting.
  • Ability to use required hand and power tools, including MIG/TIG welders and torch cutters.
  • Ability to read and work from prints, diagrams, sketches, and equipment manuals.
  • Ability to work safely around moving machinery, forklifts, wet floors, noise, nuisance dust, minimal chemical exposure, and indoor/outdoor temperature changes.
  • Ability to stand and walk extensively, bend, climb, crawl, twist, push/pull, and lift 30 pounds or more as required.
  • Clear written and verbal communication and accurate maintenance-record habits.
  • Self-directed work style with the ability to work independently or as part of a maintenance and production team.
  • Willingness to work the confirmed shift, pack-season overtime, weekends, and seasonal schedule changes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of industrial maintenance mechanic experience.
  • Food, beverage, dairy, canning, packaging, or other high-throughput manufacturing experience.
  • Strong welding, fabrication, machining, millwright, pneumatic, hydraulic, conveyor, pump, gearbox, and rotating-equipment experience.
  • Post-high-school technical education or training in industrial maintenance, electromechanical technology, welding, automation, diesel/heavy equipment, or a related discipline.
  • Experience helping train junior mechanics or coordinate daily maintenance work.
