Part-Time School Health Physician — Pediatric Care Leader

City Medical Specialist I / 35 hours (Part‑Time) The Office of School Health's Medical Unit physicians provide legally mandated services based upon Health Code 49‑05(b). These physicians deliver direct clinical services and case management to students in all boroughs, prioritizing communities with the highest prevalence of pediatric chronic diseases and disabilities. The physician collaborates with community medical providers to support students with special health care needs and/or chronic diseases, reviews medical accommodations, coordinates care, and develops care protocols. Responsibilities Work within the mandates, policies and protocols of the Office of School Health (OSH). Attend to the health needs and medical issues specific to all students in a designated school community. Use the Automated Student Health Record (ASHR) to maintain accurate student health records. Complete medical accommodation reviews efficiently using sound clinical judgment, and coordinate services when appropriate. Conduct mandatory physical examinations, including New Admission Exams, Sports Physicals, and Working Paper Physicals. Participate in meetings concerning student medical needs at school. Implement initiatives that promote positive health behaviors. Support the development of school educational and prevention programs designed to promote student health and wellness. Provide clinical assistance in the event of an environmental or communicable disease occurrence. Function as a liaison for students with community health providers regarding medical issues that affect school performance. Support all medical initiatives established by the Office of School health, such as Asthma, Reproductive Health, Obesity, and Diabetes programs and protocols. Maintain effective public relations and communicate within the school community and community‑based organizations. Keep abreast of health‑management policy statements and emerging clinical research related to school health. Participate in OSH research activities. Attend all mandated DOHMH and OSH activities and program meetings. Attend continuing medical education classes provided by the Office of School Health. Preferred Skills Strong clinical pediatric experience. Excellent computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft applications. Excellent customer service skills. Minimum Qualifications Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and either: Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency; or Current approved application on file for admission to the certifying examination given by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency. For Assignment Level II, individuals must have one year of satisfactory experience practicing in the specialization area, in addition to the minimum qualifications above. For Assignment Level III, individuals must possess: A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York. A Master’s degree in Public Health, or an equivalent degree, including graduate credits in epidemiology and biostatistics. Completion of the CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service program may substitute for the Master’s degree. At least two years of satisfactory experience after receipt of the Master’s degree, or equivalent, in the practice of epidemiology. Specialty Board Certification or eligibility may substitute for one year of this experience. For Assignment Level IV, individuals must possess: A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York. Completion of an approved residency program in an accredited hospital, including three years of experience, in either internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics, or another related specialty area required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Valid board certification or board eligibility issued by the appropriate sub‑specialty board in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or a related subspecialty. Completion of an approved fellowship program in an accredited hospital, including two years of experience, in either infectious diseases, pulmonary medicine, or another related subspecialty required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
