Primary Function of Organizational Unit University College (UC) provides foundational academic experiences that engage students in their intellectual, personal, and professional development. University College fosters a supportive environment toward successful college transitions, academic achievement, and graduation. Primary Purpose of Position The Associate Vice Provost of University College serves as the chief academic and administrative leader responsible for advancing student success, retention, and academic progression for lower-division students and students who have not declared a major. Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, with a dotted-line relationship to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management, the Associate Vice Provost establishes the strategic vision, priorities, and goals for University College and leads coordinated efforts to improve student persistence, engagement, and degree completion. The position provides oversight of undergraduate academic advising, academic coaching, peer mentoring, and other centralized academic support services designed to help students define educational and career goals and develop pathways for success. The Associate Vice Provost also provides comprehensive administrative oversight for fiscal management, personnel, professional development, academic services, and operational activities while fostering collaboration across academic and enrollment units. Additionally, the position represents the University in external initiatives, including community engagement, partnership development, fundraising, and other strategic activities that advance the mission and goals of University College. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrated leadership ability and a commitment to working effectively and collegially with University administrators, faculty, staff, and students. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated sensitivity to issues affecting a diverse range of constituencies. Demonstrated experience in budget development and oversight, financial management, and personnel administration. Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to effectively engage with individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives. Demonstrated commitment to high-quality special programs, academic support services, and educational initiatives. Working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, regulations, policies, and campus compliance requirements. Education: A terminal degree (e.g., Ed.D., Ph.D., J.D.) from an accredited institution is required. Experience: A minimum of three years of successful administrative or demonstrated leadership experience at the Director, Associate/Assistant Dean, Department Chair, or Dean level, with responsibilities related to the duties of the position. A minimum of three years of experience developing, implementing, or leading student retention and student success initiatives. Demonstrated administrative experience, such as serving as a department chair, program coordinator, or in a comparable leadership role. Demonstrated record of success in leading undergraduate teaching, mentoring, student retention, and academic program instruction. Demonstrated success in leading and managing a large academic or administrative unit. Provide overall strategic leadership, direction, advocacy, communication, coordination, and assessment for University College and its programs. Advance the mission, vision, and values of North Carolina Central University through effective leadership of the College and active participation as a collaborative member of the University’s administrative leadership team. Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and team-oriented environment that promotes engagement, accountability, innovation, and professional excellence among faculty and staff. Develop and lead a strong, cohesive leadership team that establishes clear priorities, promotes shared accountability, and advances the College’s strategic objectives. Design and implement an administrative organizational structure that aligns University College functions with appropriate University units and strengthens coordination of research, assessment and accreditation, student development, enrollment management, faculty development, budget and business operations, and career and professional development. Empower the leadership team and department heads to coordinate cross-functional initiatives, streamline operations, and strengthen collaboration with academic and administrative units across the University. Develop and implement strategies to expand external funding opportunities, including grants, partnerships, philanthropic support, and other resources that advance the College’s programs and priorities. Enhance the visibility, reputation, and engagement of University College through strategic communication, marketing, social media, community outreach, and other communication platforms. Function Function Leadership and Collaboration Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. Initiate and oversee personnel searches and recruitment activities for University College in collaboration with the Associate Deans, ensuring alignment with university policies and strategic workforce needs. Promote diversity, inclusion, and equitable hiring practices throughout the recruitment and selection process while ensuring appropriate advocacy for the College’s staffing needs. Function Function Coordination - Operations Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. Ensure accurate and timely academic advising, academic coaching, tutoring, and writing assistance are available to all students within their respective majors. Ensure high-quality academic support services are consistently delivered throughout University College. Develop and implement programs and initiatives designed to support special and targeted student populations. Align student support programs with priorities established by the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor, the University Strategic Plan, and the UNC System. Function Function Operations Management Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. Direct and coordinate all fundraising activities for University College. Develop and implement strategies to increase financial support and resources for University College programs and initiatives. Coordinate promotional and outreach activities that enhance the visibility and advancement of University College.
