City College of San Francisco is looking to recruit full time, (40 hours/week), full year (260 days/fiscal year) Institutional Police Officers. Under the direction of the Chief of Police or his/her designee, the Institutional Police Officer works in the San Francisco Community College District Police Department and acts as a peace officer pursuant to Section 830.32(a) of the California Penal Code and Section 72330 of the California Education Code. The San Francisco Community College District Police Department is a Peace Officers' Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) participant. The officer's primary functions are to provide protection of life and property and to enforce state and local laws and college policies within the jurisdiction of San Francisco Community College District campuses. In accordance with District policy, the San Francisco Community College District Police Department is a sworn unarmed department. Employees are required to sign a memorandum acknowledging their understanding of the district's policy in this regard.Job Description Please note the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the 8204-INSTITUTIONAL POLICE OFFICER class code and not intended to be an inclusive list. Essential FunctionsAdministers first aid to students, staff and/or visitors for the purpose of providing immediate emergency medical care.Arrests individuals engaging in illegal activities for the purpose of apprehending suspects to prevent further illegal activities.Collaborates with community agencies (e.g. law enforcement, courts, health care, etc.) for the purpose of addressing individual cases and/or taking action regarding investigations, criminal activities, gang activities, vandalism, etc. for the safety and security of the college sites.Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information, the potential consequences of violation, and building a community relationship.Enforces applicable laws for the purpose of responding appropriately in accordance to federal, state, District, and municipal laws, rules, and policies.Enforces college policies as necessary (e.g. student ticketing, disciplinary issues, etc.) for the purpose of implementing campus Police Department processes and student code of conduct.Escorts students, assigned personnel and/or visitors for the purpose of providing safety and providing site security.Implements safety escorts (e.g. students, staff, visitors, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safe movement on campus.Investigates potential campus crimes and/or student related community incidents for the purpose of resolving conflicts, taking appropriate action, and/or referring to outside agency for resolution.Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.Patrols college facilities (e.g. grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal activities.Prepares a variety of documents (e.g. police reports, citations, incident reports, activity logs, memos, letters, procedures, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.Presents information in a variety of settings (e.g. classrooms, meetings, staff orientations, etc.) for the purpose of informing individuals of public safety, law enforcement procedures and individual rights.Provides traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lot/s.Reports safety issues or concerns (e.g. to maintenance department ( broken fixtures, insufficient lighting), etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment, free of hazards.Responds to a variety of situations (e.g. accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of making appropriate response and taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.Responds calls for services from a variety of sources regarding campus security issues for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry.Testifies in court proceedings for the purpose of providing information regarding alleged illegal activity.Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. This classification may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing, running or sitting for prolonged periods of time; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; possible exposure to physical injury and other dangers inherent in police work. Must possess satisfactory hearing capabilities and visual acuity of at least 20/100 correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye. Officers are required to wear police uniforms, a bullet proof vests, and required police gear. Officers are required to work flexible shifts, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Officers may be assigned to any of the district campuses under the department policy and/or at the discretion of the Chief of Police. The department currently operates two shifts: Day shift and swing shift. Shifts are 5 days/8 hours per day or 4 days/10 hours per day: 7 days a week.Qualifications HOW TO QUALIFY: Applicants must meet the Minimum Qualifications requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must be a current Provisional Employee in Class 8204 who has worked at least 2,080 hours in class 8204 with no break in service; AND 2. Education: High School diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination); AND 3. Experience: One (1) year of experience as a police officer, member of a military police unit or other work involving the safeguarding of life and property; AND License and Certification:Requires possession of a valid California Driver License; ANDPossession of a Basic P.O.S.T. Ranking Based on Verified Provisional In-Class Service Duration: Qualified applicants will be ranked on the eligible list based on the length of their Provisional City service in the 8204 - INSTITUTIONAL POLICE OFFICER class, along with any additional qualifying points (e.g., promotive status), as outlined in Civil Service Commission (CSC) rules. All work history will be verified using official City records, which will serve as the final authority in determining qualifying service. NOTE: Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed to advance through all the steps in the selection process. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make the final hiring decision. Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list of qualifying candidates will be created and used for certification purposes only. A score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection upon request once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved.
