Pre-OP/PACU Manager

This position requires minimum 5 years' experience in the Pre-op or PACU field. Must have previous surgical management experience. Busy Surgical Ambulatory setting with 3 OR's, 8 recovery bays, and operational 6 days/week. Responsibilities Responsible for the care of patients before and after surgery and anesthesia. Oversee Pre-op and PACU RN’s. Maintain PACU area in a clean and proper environment for patient care. Maintain emergency equipment and understand use of such equipment. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of and compliance with safety policies and procedures, recognizes safety hazards, and initiate appropriate corrective and/or preventative measures. Duties of the position Ability to have a flexible schedule and work a variety of hours Responsible for managing the Pre-op/PACU RN’s, including but not limited to schedules, assigning tasks and responsibilities, vacation schedules, assign housekeeping duties, assign supply ordering and maintenance of PACU. Ability to teach RN’s skills and job duties. Effectively communicate with patients and medical personnel Conducts an individualized patient assessment, prioritizing the collected data based on the patients immediate condition or needs; reprioritizes care appropriately. Develops a nurse care plan individualized for the patient that is age specific and collaborative with the interdisciplinary health teams. Performs therapeutic nursing interventions established in the plan of care for the patient and accompanying family members, friends, and significant others. Administer treatments and medications as ordered by the physicians or licensed independent practitioners and according to establish protocols (policies and procedures). Document patient assessment and findings, physical/biopsychosocial responses to nursing interventions and progress toward goal completion and problem solving. Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality, complying with HIPPA privacy and security rules. Provides care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that reflects cultural and sensitivity. Preserves patients dignity, autonomy, privacy and rights/responsibilities Communicates hand-off information when passing patient from pre-op to operating room staff. Performs electrocardiogram and conveys results to appropriate parties. Complies with facility infection control policies and procedures. Checks crash cart, defibrillator, locks, waived testing on a daily basis. Maintains biohazards and complies with OSHA protocol Contact patients and conduct a pre-operative screening. Understand guidelines to determine if a patient is an acceptable candidate for surgery. Obtain proper clearances, labs and paperwork for patients scheduled for surgery. Knowledge of computer systems to help create and maintain patient education materials Ability to teach patients pre-operative and post-operative care and instructions. Check in patients to facility. Review consents, start IV, properly help the patient prepare for surgery. Review procedures and Care for patients before after surgery and anesthesia; airway management, pain control, nausea control, IV maintenance, proper positioning, Understanding and administration of postop orders. Providing medication for pain and nausea control as well as other medications per doctor’s orders. Proper documentation of patient care. Ensure patient has appropriate caregiver to take patient home and care for him/her. Educating caregiver of patient care once leaving the facility. Maintaining recovery area – maintenance cleaning, stocking of medical supplies as well as nutritional supplies, laundry, medications. Understanding of cost maintenance and awareness. Maintaining narcotic drug count. Emergency management of patient as needed. Understand and comply with all OSHA and biohazard standards. Physical Requirements Good physical condition to frequently walk, bend, stoop and squat; occasionally sit, occasionally lift, carry, push, pull maximum over 50lbs with assistance. Must be able to see, hear, speak, and use both hands to easily communicate. Occupational Exposure Job involves tasks or procedures that have exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.
