Job Description
ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

The unit consists of 39 beds across a mixed ICU, including MICU, SICU, CICU, and TICU pods. Floating to the CVICU is restricted to experienced staff only.

Experience Requirements

• Minimum of 2 years of ICU experience, excluding travel assignments, is preferred.
• Candidates with 1.5 years of ICU experience, excluding travel, and significant nursing experience outside of ICU may be considered with management approval.
• First-time travelers are not accepted; candidates must have completed at least one prior travel assignment.
• Travelers must reside at least 100 miles away from any facility within the region.

Patient Types

Candidates will work with complex ICU patients, including surgical, medical, cardiac (preferred), neuro, and trauma patients. Expected diagnoses include, but are not limited to, ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, post-cardiac catheterization, post-surgical cases, and multiple system trauma.

Preferred Qualifications

• Cardiac experience is preferred, especially 24 to 48 hours post-op for CABG/TAVR.
• Fresh open heart cases will only be assigned to experienced staff as determined by facility comfort.

Patient Ratios

The RN-to-patient ratio is typically 1:1, 1:2, or occasionally 1:3, depending on acuity.

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS
• TNCC (required; travelers must obtain this certification prior to arrival)

Required Education

Candidates must have completed a nursing education program approved by the board of nursing and be a registered nurse (RN) as recognized by the South Dakota Board of Nursing.

Core Skills Required

• Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
• Comfortable working 48 hours per week; alternative schedules may require management approval.
• Familiarity with IV medications, including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics.
• Proficient in hemodynamic monitoring, proning, ventilator management, and telemetry.
• Strong critical thinking and assessment skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team-focused and fast-paced environment.

Preferred Technical Skills

• Experience with Impella, IABP, and CRRT is strongly preferred.

Unit Support Structure

• Each unit typically has 1-2 nurse aides along with a mobility float aide.
• Roles of charge nurses and resource nurses are available, depending on staffing needs.
• 24/7 respiratory therapy support is available.
• Three intensivists on days and two on nights, with advanced practice providers on nights.

Charting System

Epic is required for documentation within the ICU.

Orientation Process

• One 8-hour hospital orientation and iLearns.
• One 4-hour period for completing required iLearns.
• Two 12-hour shifts for floor orientation.
• One additional 12-hour independent shift required for 48-hour travelers.

Scheduling Details

• Weekend rotation attempts to achieve every other weekend but is not guaranteed.
• No time off during holidays or during special events, such as the Sturgis Bike Rally occurring in the first three weeks of August.

Other Information

• Expectations may include precepting nursing students.
• Team members wear navy scrubs.
• Free parking is provided for staff.

Will you accept a first-time traveler? No. Minimum one prior travel assignment
Traveler must reside >100 miles outside of facility
Permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning as a traveler
Patient Types:
Complex ICU patients ranging from surgical, medical, cardiac (preferred), neuro and trauma
Diagnoses include: ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, s/p cardiac cath, post-surgical, multiple system trauma - heavy trauma population
Cardiac experience is preferred (not required): CABG/TAVR - 24 to 48 hrs post op experience is preferred but not required for travelers
Will not take fresh open hearts unless they are experienced, and the facility felt comfortable with this - given to permanent staff
