GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION

The Mental Health Counselor will provide developmental and educational support to students, or other clients of the college, in the form of short-term personal counseling; provide counseling services to students in a manner that demonstrates a commitment to the Community College mission and its diverse student population. Through a comprehensive, student-centered counseling approach, to develop and present structured groups for positive growth; to develop, monitor, and provide in-service training in counseling support programs; and to do related work as required. Ability to utilize a wide range of assessment instruments for personal, career, and educational issues.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

Current Mississippi Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) preferred. Candidates currently holding a Mississippi Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor (P-LPC) credential, or who are eligible to obtain P-LPC licensure within 90 days of employment, are encouraged to apply.

Experience providing counseling, behavioral health, crisis intervention, case management, student support, or related services preferred. Relevant graduate practicum and internship experience may be considered. Experience working with college age populations or in higher education is desirable but not required.

The successful candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, sound clinical judgment, the ability to manage confidential and sensitive information, and a commitment to student development and well-being. The candidate should be able to work independently while collaborating effectively with counseling staff, faculty, student services personnel, campus safety personnel, and community providers.

Knowledge of applicable ethical standards, confidentiality requirements, FERPA, HIPAA as applicable, crisis intervention practices, and culturally responsive counseling practices is preferred.

Licensure Development Opportunity: Eligible P-LPC employees may have the opportunity to obtain qualifying clinical experience and supervision toward full LPC licensure through a Mississippi Board Qualified Supervisor (LPC-S), in accordance with Mississippi Board requirements

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Counselor Education, or another counseling degree meeting the educational requirements for Mississippi P-LPC licensure from an accredited institution required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES , include the following.

Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation, and best practices.

The Mental Health Counselor plays a critical role as part of the Mental Health Services department. The Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing clinical mental health services. This includes providing clinical mental health counseling in the individual and group setting, the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies, procedures, and programs, as well as consulting with faculty, staff, and administration over mental health topics. The Mental Health Counselor will participate in developing proactive mental health and wellness programming for the entire college population and assist with staff training as needed.

Provide individual and group mental health counseling services to the student population, including evaluation, development, and facilitation of support groups, and making referrals to external clinicians as needed. Develop mental health programs in conjunction with the Dean of Student Services. Facilitate training and psycho-educational workshops for students, faculty, and staff. Maintain confidential clinical schedule and case files . Attend ongoing trainings as required (current updated license, etc.) Assist in the development, support, and supervision of interns, if applicable. Ability to adhere to college policies and procedures. Ability to handle confidential information with discretion. Should be committed to a culture of diversity, respect, and inclusion.
