Job Title: Staff Nurse Specialty Care Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Cardiothoracic Surgery Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day Rotational Hours per Shift: 10 hours Experience: Six (6) months to three (3) years of nursing (RN) experience License: Current Registered Nurse License Certifications: BLS Certification (AHA, HSI, or American Red Cross) Must-Have: - Collaboration - Communication (verbal & written) - Judgment/Critical Thinking - Organizational Understanding - Planning (Organizing, Time Management) - Problem Solving - Quality - Reliability - Safety and Risk Management Description: The Registered Nurse (RN) protects, promotes, and optimizes health and abilities. The RN also focuses on the prevention of illness and injury as well as alleviating suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human responses. Advocacy in the care of individuals and families is a fundamental responsibility of the RN. The RN is accountable for compliance with all standards of practice and professional development. This includes adherence to applicable policies, scope and standards of practice, and codes of ethics for nurses. The RN fosters a caring and healing environment centered around patient care. The RN assesses, plans, delegates, coordinates, implements, and evaluates nursing care for a group of patients. When designated by unit assignment, the RN serves as a primary nurse and/or accountable nurse. Factors such as safety, effectiveness, competency, cost, and impact are carefully considered. Patient and family education in health promotion and disease management is a priority. Utilization of pharmacology knowledge is essential for the safe administration of medications. The RN shares in the responsibility for productivity and effective resource utilization. This includes managing staffing, time, supplies, and services efficiently. Compliance with nursing practice standards and regulatory requirements is mandatory. The RN actively participates in nursing governance and improvement initiatives. Engagement in professional development and completion of mandatory education requirements is encouraged. Integration of nursing research and current evidence into practice is valued. Providing a supportive learning environment for new employees and students is a key responsibility. The RN may perform Charge Nurse or Shift Coordinator duties when assigned. Participation in the Clinical Ladder Program is encouraged as knowledge and expertise develop. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary. Schedule includes 4 ten-hour shifts from 7 am to 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Focus is primarily on cardiothoracic surgery but the RN may be asked to cover general surgery as needed. Call hours may require covering 3 to 4 shifts per week and up to every other weekend. Call shifts typically extend from the end of a worked shift until the start of the next scheduled shift.
