As a Software Engineering Manager within PNC's SRC First Response organization, you will be based in Pittsburgh, PA, Cleveland, OH, Dallas, TX, Birmingham, AL, Phoenix, AZ or Denver, CO. Provide after-hours operational leadership and on-call support. Participate in an on-call leadership rotation supporting critical production services, major incidents, and high-severity customer-impacting events. Availability outside standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required to support incident response, change events, escalations, and business continuity needs. Travel occasionally for offsite meetings or other business-related activities (less than 5% travel) Technical Skills & Expertise Ideal candidates should have working knowledge or experience in at least three areas: Core Technologies • Programming/Runtime: Java, SQL, Tomcat, Websphere • Databases: Oracle, SQL, Neo4J, Mongo (distributed) or DB2, VSAM (mainframe) • Streaming/Event Platforms: Kafka • Caching/Data Stores: Redis, ESS • Operating Systems: Linux/Unix, Windows Server, could include Windows/Linus (distributed) or TCO/CICS (mainframe) • Container Platforms: OpenShift (OCP) Observability & Troubleshooting Tooling • Experience using one or more of the following for monitoring, triage, and root cause analysis: o Dynatrace o BigPanda o ElasticSearch o Grafana Candidates should be comfortable leveraging these tools to correlate events, analyze system behavior, and accelerate incident resolution. Leadership & Management Skills • At least 5 years’ experience leading teams with increasing levels of responsibility over time • Proven ability to: o Build and develop high-performing teams o Coach and mentor talent o Drive accountability and ownership • Experience delivering projects and initiatives from inception through execution • Ability to maintain composure and lead effectively during high-stress incidents or outages Critical Thinking & Problem Solving • Strong root cause analysis discipline—not just resolving issues but identifying underlying causes • Ability to apply 2nd and 3rd order thinking, including: o Understanding downstream impacts of decisions o Applying learnings broadly across systems and teams • Proactively identifies and addresses systemic weaknesses that enable incidents • Focus on preventing regression through process, tooling, and architectural improvements Systems Thinking • Ability to understand complex cause-and-effect relationships across distributed systems • Evaluates problems in a broad, end-to-end context, rather than in isolation • Recognizes patterns across incidents and environments to drive strategic improvements Communication Skills • Ability to adapt communication style based on audience (technical teams, leadership, business stakeholders) • Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially during incident situations • Capable of translating complex technical issues into clear, actionable insights Behavioral & Professional Attributes • Maintains appropriate temperament under pressure • Demonstrates resilience and sound judgment during critical incidents • Strong ownership mindset with a focus on outcomes • Collaborative and team-oriented approach • Continuous learner with a focus on improvement and operational excellence • Participate in on-call support and respond to critical incidents when required • Summary Profile of Ideal Candidate A successful ASM candidate combines: • Deep technical breadth across multiple disciplines • Strong leadership and team development capabilities • Advanced problem-solving and systems thinking • Ability to lead through ambiguity and high-pressure situations • Commitment to continuous improvement and preventing recurring issues PNC is an in-office company that fosters a supportive culture where employees can thrive and achieve balance. Oversees multiple application programming and analysis projects which include development, installation and maintenance of application programs. Monitors and maintains adherence and compliance to quality standards on an ongoing basis. Maximizes staff contribution through professional growth and development, to increase teamwork and more effectively meet business needs. Analyzes applications to ensure that all systems that are developed, meet business needs and specifications. Education Bachelors Certifications No Required Certification(s) Licenses No Required License(s) Pay Transparency Base Salary: $110,110.00 – $204,490.00 Salaries may vary based on geographic location, market data and on individual skills, experience, and education. This role is incentive eligible with the payment based upon company, business and/or individual performance.
