General Job Information There is only one city in the country that can say it is the Nation’s Capital – Washington. Union Representation This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and may require a payroll deduction for agency service fees. Essential Position Essential, which includes call‑in and callback duties. Qualifications United States citizen at the time of application. 21 years of age or older. 20/100 vision in each eye, correctable to 20/30 (contacts permitted for six months prior to examination or laser surgery at least six weeks before). Valid driver’s license at the time of application. Pass a police officer selection multiple‑choice test. Pass a physical ability test. Submit to a polygraph examination. Pass a medical examination, including a drug‑screening test (blood, urine, and hair). Meet proportionate height and weight as measured by percentage of body fat. Pass a psychological examination. Possess a high moral character for carrying out law enforcement duties. Must have one of the following: Successfully completed at least 60 semester hours of college credit with coursework in any subject matter (credits from any accredited college or university are accepted). Served in the United States Armed Forces, including Organized Reserves and National Guard, for at least two years on active duty with an honorable discharge. Served at least three years in a full‑duty status with a full‑service police department in a municipality or state within the United States, and have resigned or retired in good standing. Licensures, Certifications and Other Requirements N/A Work Experience N/A Work Environment The work environment regularly involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress requiring a range of safety and other precautions. A background investigation, including a criminal, traffic and credit check, is required. Benefits $25,000 Hiring Bonus – All new hires receive $15,000 at the start of academy training and an additional $10,000 upon successful academy graduation. An obligatory two‑year service agreement is required; early resignation requires repayment of the bonus. Temporary Housing – $200 per night for up to two weeks (max $2,800) from a hotel in Washington, DC, for candidates living more than 50 miles away. MPD assists with local hotel arrangements. Rental Assistance – $1,000 per month for six months for a residence in DC (up to $6,000 total). If temporary housing is used, the amount is deducted from this total.
