Structural Designer III – Job Description

The Structural Designer III is responsible for preparing detailed structural drawings and 3D models for industrial and heavy commercial projects. This role works closely with structural engineers and multidisciplinary design teams to develop construction-ready packages supporting fabrication, installation, and field execution.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Develop detailed 2D drawings and 3D structural models for steel structures, pipe racks, platforms, equipment supports, foundations, and industrial buildings.
• Produce construction and fabrication drawings including plans, elevations, sections, and connection details.
• Coordinate structural designs with piping, mechanical, electrical, civil, and process disciplines.
• Interpret engineering sketches, calculations, specifications, and vendor documentation.
• Perform field walkdowns and site verification to support brownfield and retrofit projects.
• Support model reviews, clash detection, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
• Maintain compliance with applicable industry codes, client standards, and safety requirements.
• Assist with drawing checking, quality control, and design revisions.
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior designers and drafting personnel.
• Support project schedules and deliverables in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Qualifications

• 3-7+ years of structural design and drafting experience in industrial, manufacturing, power, chemical, marine, or EPC environments.
• Strong proficiency with AutoCAD and 3D modeling platforms such as Plant 3D, CadWorx, Revit, or SmartPlant.
• Experience with structural steel detailing, concrete foundations, and equipment support design.
• Understanding of AISC, IBC, OSHA, and industrial structural standards.
• Ability to coordinate effectively with engineers, designers, and field personnel.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate degree or technical certification in Drafting & Design Technology or related field.
• Experience supporting refinery, chemical, pulp & paper, utility, or shipbuilding projects.
• Familiarity with Navisworks, Bluebeam, and laser scan/point cloud integration.
• Previous experience checking drawings or leading small project teams.
