The Phlebotomist procures and routes laboratory specimens from outpatient and inpatient collections, maintains laboratory files and is responsible for related clerical duties in the laboratory. Understands age specific requirements for patients of all ages and is able to demonstrate required competencies. Other duties may be assigned as required by laboratory management.

The evaluation is to assure individual performance, departmental goals and organizational goals are aligned. It is designed to support communication between the manager and the employee. Employee perception of their own performance is very important. To maximize the benefit of this process, both the manager and the employee participate in the evaluation process.

Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduation from approved Phlebotomy program preferred

Licensure:

• None required.

Experience:

• Previous experience is desired, but not required.

• Sit and stand for long periods of time
• Able to walk distances throughout the hospital
• Able to push and pull up to 100 lbs

• Able to perform tasks which assist the technical staff and phlebotomy techniques with related clerical duties.

Job Specific Duties and Performance Standards:

• Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick, and bleeding time) according to established procedures.
• Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
• Determines priority of Stat, Routine, and Timed draws. Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens to the lab for testing.
• Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions.
• Serves as a receptionist, greets patients, and answers phones as required.
• Performs related laboratory duties.
• Is responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department.
• Helps co-workers when needed and communicates to ensure an orderly work-flow.
• Readily accepts changes in assignments or schedules.
• Aids in the training of new employees and students in the performance of duties.
• Follows all organizational and department policies and procedures.
• Functions as a role model for current and new staff.
• Understands principles of correct specimen collection and handling of non-blood specimens, and is able to give patient instructions.
