Pediatric Speech Pathologist II

The Staff Speech‑Language Pathologist (Speech Pathologist 2) works with pediatric patients across the age continuum – infants, children, adolescents – from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, providing both direct and indirect patient care services. Duties & Essential Job Functions Performs speech‑language pathology evaluations on referral by a licensed provider and administers various neurological, dysphagia, cognitive‑linguistic, voice, and speech‑language tests to determine a patient’s functional limitations. Establishes short‑ and long‑term therapeutic goals based on the evaluation results and in consultation with the referring provider and caregiver/family. Develops a therapeutic plan of care based on the evaluation results and established goals, making appropriate changes in interventions based on patient progress. Administers direct patient care using the full range of speech‑language therapy techniques within scope of practice and level of competence, appropriate to the patient’s goals and plan of care. Delegates and supervises any part of the patient’s therapeutic intervention that can be legally and appropriately performed by support staff. Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate. Prepares and maintains accurate and timely patient care records, including services rendered, progress notes, discharge notes, charges for services, and third‑party payer reports (e.g., CCS, Medi‑Cal). Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, caregivers/families, department staff, managers, and other clinical personnel. Reports on patient progress at team conferences, clinics, and rounds, and provides therapy notes for interdisciplinary teams. Demonstrates effective time management and organization skills. Educational Responsibilities Participates in staff in‑service education programs, staff and team meetings. Participates in orientation and training of new staff. Participates in and provides programs to the community and other hospital departments. Participates in clinical precepting of affiliating speech‑language pathology interns and clinical fellows, and in departmental education activities involving students from other health care professions. Seeks appropriate opportunities for ongoing education and professional development. Departmental Responsibilities Participates in department quality assurance and performance improvement activities. Contributes to departmental goals by participating in special projects and committees. Required Qualifications Master’s degree with clinical fellowship (if graduated 15 or more years ago, a bachelor’s degree). Minimum one year of patient care experience. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Ability to recognize signs of distress. Basic computer skills, including use of the Epic electronic medical record. Possession of good interpersonal, time‑management, problem‑solving, and self‑initiation skills. Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations. Pediatric outpatient speech and language assessment and treatment clinical experience. Preferred Qualifications Minimum one year of licensed experience as a Speech‑Language Pathologist working with pediatric populations. Prior speech pathology experience in an academic medical center environment. Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team. Current Pediatric FEES and/or MBSS competence. Required Licenses/Certifications Possession of or proven eligibility for licensure as a Speech‑Language Pathologist by the Speech‑Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California. Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification. Pediatric feeding and swallowing assessment and treatment, including skills to perform pediatric Modified Barium Swallow Studies.
