Job Description OIEC - Early Assistance Advocate for Injured Employees (Ombudsman I) – Austin (00058675) Organization Office of Injured Employee Counsel (OIEC) Primary Location Texas – Austin Work Locations Austin Field Office (448-AUSFO), 1601 Congress Avenue, Austin 78701 Position Overview The Office of Injured Employee Counsel (OIEC) is hiring an Early Assistance Advocate to work with senior Ombudsmen. The advocate will use early‑intervention strategies to assist injured employees before hearings, providing guidance, assembling evidence, resolving disputes, and maintaining communication throughout the claims process. Key Responsibilities Educate injured employees about the workers’ compensation dispute process and applicable law. Advocate for the expedient resolution of claims by assembling evidence needed for insurance carrier determinations. Contact insurance carriers and medical providers to identify and resolve disputes. Assist with referrals to social services and other state agencies. Provide assistance in filing claims and obtaining supporting documentation from doctors. Routinely contact injured employees to provide status updates and discuss upcoming events. Document all customer contacts in the computer system. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university. One year of experience in claims management, insurance, casework, healthcare, social work, law office (paralegal/legal assistant), or workers’ compensation. Alternative: High‑school graduate or equivalent with two years of experience working for OIEC. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge: Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Skills: Assisting the public. Handling and solving problems. Report writing and records maintenance principles and practices. Interpreting and explaining laws and regulations. Data entry and retrieval. Use of correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Abilities: Manage multiple, competing priorities. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with injured employees and staff. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all levels of employees and the public.
