Summary Under direct supervision of the provider, the staff member will be responsible for patient assessment and care, and maintaining appropriate documentation. This position must have basic knowledge of specialty and/or primary care, and be able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients. It is responsible for coordinating care to ensure high‑quality, compassionate patient care. The employee will maintain and oversee patients at office locations, act as liaison with other organizations and departments, order medical, pharmacy, and office supplies, and assure compliance with MyMichigan Health policies, OSHA guidelines, CLIA regulations, and all relevant regulatory agencies. They will coordinate with and train new employees, students, and float staff as needed. The clinical person will provide patient education, assist with specialty care modalities, symptom management, be available for emergencies, monitor compliance, manage high‑risk patients, educate on prescriptions and side effects, and coordinate continuity of care with other providers. General office duties (keyboarding, filing, telephone, computer and office equipment) may also be performed as needed. Responsibilities Triages all calls, schedules daily urgent/emergent add‑ons, receives and relays test results, processes medication refills, supports, directs and refers patients for consults or testing, and handles insurance pre‑certification and documentation. Provides complete patient assessment within licensure scope, greets patients and families, performs routine pre‑examination procedures including vital signs, records objective and subjective data, updates and maintains accurate patient records, performs medication reconciliation, enters allergy reaction types, and processes refills within certification scope. Coordinates the care team based on provider indication, working with patients and families to explain disease process and care management. Assists provider with examinations and procedures. Prepares and cleans the patient area, sets up equipment, cleans and facilitates room setup after a procedure, disposes of contaminated supplies, and sterilizes medical instruments. Other Duties and Responsibilities Demonstrates critical thinking for patient management. Provides age‑specific needs for the population served, in accordance with standards and policies, as evidenced by observation, documentation, and peer feedback. Maintains medical supplies to assure consistent supply levels for patient needs. Understands necessary computer functions in the office setting: Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS), Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR), Practice Management, Electronic Medical Records, Laboratory Information System (LIS), Emageon, dictation systems, and other necessary programs. If applicable, may be required to travel to satellite clinics. Maintains a system for accurately documenting and coding in the medical record as appropriate per policy. Participates in annual review for quality and completeness as necessary. Manages patient symptoms as directed by the provider. Coordinates and ensures continuity of care with other providers. Certifications and Licensures BLS – Basic Life Support Required within one month of hire or transfer. RN – Registered Nurse Required. Required Education Associates Degree. BSN is preferred. Experience, Training and Skills Working knowledge of the organization’s Infor, Electronic Medical Records and Practice Management programs, or similar software. PC software knowledge including Excel and Word. Knowledge of medical office policies, practices and procedures normally acquired through three to five years of experience in the health care system or similar setting. Excellent interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and interact with people at all levels, presenting concepts in a clear and understandable manner. Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, trauma, grief, and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitutes if required. Must be able to move freely throughout the facility with or without an assistive device and perform all job functions as outlined. Overall vision and hearing are necessary, with or without assistive devices. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk for long periods, and make frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials; must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements as required. Must handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay alert. Physical demand level: light.
