Job Summary

Under direct supervision, provides general instructional and teaching assistance to assigned teacher(s). Conducts such duties to support instruction as preparing copies, preparing mailings, performing light typing and data entry, etc. May use computers in performing assigned tasks. Duties may be specialized as required by area of instruction, type of students, etc.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Provides classroom teaching assistance such as reinforcing skills, completing roll call and student counts, administering make-up tests, etc.
  2. Assists teachers with academic instruction and classroom activities; prepares and disseminates materials for classroom activities. Sets up classroom for special activities as assigned such as preparing materials for classroom, setting up charts, etc.
  3. Demonstrates the ability to perform remedial instruction or tasks to reinforce learning initiated by teacher.
  4. Exhibits the ability to work with students requiring individual or close attention, reads to children, listens to their reactions, and suggests improvements.
  5. Is effective in monitoring and assisting groups of students engaged in curriculum activities.
  6. Demonstrates the ability to observe and assist individual students that are experiencing difficulties.
  7. Distributes and collects appropriate materials, sets up the classroom for instructional projects, and sets up and operates audio-visual equipment as needed.
  8. Effectively supervises playground activities, monitors students in the cafeteria, during rest periods, coming on and off buses, or as they go to and from classes.
  9. Demonstrates the ability to perform other classroom or school-wide clerical tasks; prepares, compiles, and makes copies of instructional materials and reports, files classroom or student records, distributes textbooks and other instructional materials appropriately.
  10. Assists teacher in arranging for field trips (permission slips, arrangement of transportation, etc.), speakers/presenters, and related educational activities; accompanies class on field trips as required.
  11. Types, completes and/or files various records and forms.
  12. Collects incoming monies for field trips, school pictures, and other school fees; prepares receipts for monies collected.
  13. Performs miscellaneous tasks such as distributing materials, escorting students to other areas of the school, etc.
  14. Operates general office equipment such as a computer, copier, laminator, and calculator.
  15. Implementing and enforcing classroom management plans
  16. May assist students on and off of Special Needs Bus at the beginning and end of the day.
  17. Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities.
  18. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility.
  19. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by immediate supervisor.
Education and Experience:
  1. Associate Degree, 60 college credit hours, or must have passed the ParaPro Exam with a high school diploma.
  2. A good knowledge of and understanding of child growth and development; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge:
  1. Knowledge of proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  2. Working knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and operations.
  3. General knowledge of modern office equipment such as copiers, and calculators.
  4. Knowledge of clerical functions such as typing, filing and sorting.
  5. Knowledge in the application of classroom instruction and teaching.
  6. Has knowledge of modern office practices and technology; has skill in the use of computers for word and data processing and records management.
  7. Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology and various professional languages used within the department.
  8. Knows how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation.
  9. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
Skills/Effort:
  1. Skill in the use of general office equipment such as calculators, computers, copiers, etc.
  2. Good written and verbal communication, organization, basic mathematical, and telephone skills.
  3. Ability to interact with co-workers, students and school staff in a courteous and professional manner.
  4. Ability to provide assistance to teachers in classroom situations.
Working Conditions:
  1. Conducts duties in an office environment with some exposure to environmental conditions, primarily due to the outside supervision of students.
  2. Physical demands are restricted to office work requiring the lifting/moving of items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  3. Occasional local travel may be required; no overnight travel is required.
  4. Job requires the operation of standard office equipment.
Working Conditions (Special Needs):
  1. Physical demands while performing the duties of this job include climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching with hands/arms, standing actively for extended periods of time, walking, using hands and fingers to key data, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; talking and hearing; reaching, pushing and pulling with hands/arms; close and distant vision, ability to adjust focus.
  2. The employee must lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move 25 lbs. Environmental factors: Assist in toileting, including diapering; feeding or oral facilitation; assist with personal hygiene for some students; venting gastrointestinal tube, suctioning (training provided); lifting and positioning disabled students.
