Position Overview The Police Officer position at the University of Kansas is a commissioned law enforcement role with full authority under applicable law. Officers perform duties in accordance with departmental rules, state laws, city ordinances, law enforcement ethics, the U.S. Constitution, and other principles of police work. Those without certification as a Kansas law‑enforcement officer will receive training at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Police Officers conduct investigations, perform searches and seizures, arrest offenders, present cases to prosecutors, respond to medical and other emergencies, issue traffic citations, and assist other local agencies. Officers are briefed by the Police Sergeant on special assignments or circumstances. The department also offers a 1% pay raise after probation, promotion opportunities, and a comprehensive benefits package. Responsibilities 40% - Patrol, Law Enforcement Operations, and Public Safety Response Patrols assigned areas on foot or by vehicle to identify signs of trouble and respond appropriately. Evaluates observed or suspected violations and determines whether to initiate investigations, searches, arrests, or other actions. Collects, analyzes, verifies, and assesses information obtained through interviews. Notifies authorities as necessary. Interviews complainants, witnesses, and suspects. Directs and controls traffic flow and pedestrian movement on campus. Enforces traffic laws, issues citations for moving violations, and performs traffic enforcement duties. Manages accident scenes, controls traffic, and investigates causes. Reports hazardous conditions and hazards. Apprehends and arrests violators, ensuring legal soundness and safety. Processes booking, testifies as witness when summoned. Responds to emergency situations, renders aid, and makes immediate decisions. Operates emergency vehicles safely. Provides assistance and renders aid to citizens and motorists. Performs duties assigned on short notice under adverse conditions. May supervise others and provide training sessions for new officers. May work on special investigations temporarily. Conducts surveillance operations for extended periods. 20% - Investigations, Evidence Handling, and Case Management Completes written reports in compliance with procedures, determining necessity andTimeliness. Initiates follow‑up reports as needed. Conducts investigations, testifies in court, and collaborates with other agencies. Locates, collects, handles, and preserves physical evidence. Marks and packages evidence, ensuring proper documentation and storage. Logs, tracks, and disposes of lost and found property. 20% - Community Engagement, Communication, and Interagency Relations Builds professional contacts with university employees, residents, and others in the patrol district. Uses communication skills to maintain control of situations and avoid escalation. Provides information about police policies and procedures to the public. Maintains professional demeanor and appearance. Disseminates information through programs, literature, and community events. Develops and conducts community programs and projects. Maintains relationships with community resource groups. Listens to community concerns and assists when possible. 15% - Training and Equipment Management Develops skills in the use of all authorized equipment. Maintains equipment in good repair and reports needs. Maintains inventory of department equipment, issues uniforms. Assists with purchasing and tracks orders, ensuring compliance. Maintains annual law‑enforcement certification and duty‑weapon qualification. Attends required training and applies knowledge fully. Keeps current on legal changes and department activities. Complies with all laws, rules, regulations, ethics, and first aid certification. 5% - Other Duties as Assigned No additional duties listed. Physical Requirements Lift and carry equipment and evidence up to 50 lbs occasionally; 25 lbs frequently. Drag, pull, or carry 150‑180 lbs over 25‑50 feet to simulate rescue. Push/pull objects with sustained effort. Stand and walk for 8‑12 hour shifts on varied terrain. Run short distances (up to ½ mile) over hilly terrain; perform rapid changes of direction. Climb and descend multiple flights of stairs carrying gear. Use control and restraint techniques requiring various positions. Enter, exit, and operate patrol vehicles repeatedly. Perform fine and gross motor tasks with both hands, including gloved use in cold weather. Work in extreme heat/cold, rain, snow, low‑light, and high‑noise environments. Have sufficient hand/eye coordination for cameras, evidence tools, and computers. Sit for extended periods during interviews, surveillance, or computer‑based work. Perform all functions safely, with or without reasonable accommodation. Position Requirements Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be 21 years of age by the time of appointment. Must possess a valid driver’s license at hire and maintain it. Must qualify annually with duty weapon. Must comply with department policies regarding intentional body alterations. Must successfully complete a background check, physical exam, drug screen, and psychological assessment. Must have no felony or equivalent convictions, expunge or diversion records. Must have no misdemeanor convictions or diversions for domestic violence or equivalent. Must be able to perform all essential job functions without posing a direct threat to self or others. Required Qualifications High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalency. Certified as a law enforcement officer or able to be certified by the Kansas Commission on Peace Officer’s Standards and Training without restriction. Preferred Qualifications Commissioned law enforcement experience as a certified police officer. Progress toward or achievement of an associate’s degree or higher in administration of justice, criminal justice, or a closely related field.
