Department 37403 Wake Forest University Health Sciences - Surgery: Orthopedics Status Full time Benefits Eligible Yes Hours Per Week 40 Schedule Details/Additional Information M-F, 8-4:30 Pay Range $30.70 - $46.05 Program Overview The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine offers a 2‑year Orthopaedic Physician Scientist Training Program. This postdoctoral experience provides mentored and protected basic science research time before clinical residency, building a foundation in research to pursue an academic Orthopaedic Surgery career. Physician Scientists may also pursue a Doctor of Philosophy degree in the Wake Forest Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Program Structure During the two‑year program, Physician Scientists work in the Orthopaedic Research Laboratories to conduct basic science research in their chosen area of interest. They are mentored by experienced researchers and clinical collaborators, and receive protected time to design studies, prepare competitive research grants, and collaborate across departments including Biomedical Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology, Comprehensive Cancer Center, Biostatistics, and Translational Sciences. Program participants do not have call obligations but participate in the core educational curriculum of the 5‑year residency, including educational conferences, Orthopaedic Grand Rounds, and subspecialty journal clubs. They may also serve as medical student facilitators, mentor postdoctoral fellows, medical students, international students, and collaborate with residents on research projects. Residency Eligibility The Physician Scientist Program is separate from Wake Forest’s 5‑year Orthopaedic Residency Program. To pursue residency at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, applicants must complete the standard ERAS residency application and match process in accordance with ACGME and NRMP guidelines.
