Step 1: $90,509 Step 2: $93,224 Step 3: $96,021 Step 4: $98,901 Position Summary Under general direction, plans, organizes, oversees, coordinates, and manages the staff of a major functional area of the Sheriff’s Office. Participates in the development of policies and strategies for division operations, manages the effective use of division or unit resources to improve organizational productivity and public service, provides complex and responsible support to assigned management personnel in areas of expertise, and performs related duties as assigned. Supervision Receives general direction from Undersheriff or higher ranks. Exercises direct supervision over supervisory, professional, technical, and administrative support staff through subordinate levels of supervision. Class Characteristics This is a management level classification within the Sheriff’s Office responsible for managing the operations, administrative, support, and/or communication functional area of the Office. Incumbents are responsible for recommending and implementing policies and procedures for the assigned division, participating in budget administration and reporting, and coordinating key programs and projects with other County divisions, departments, and external agencies. Example of Duties Directs, manages, and supervises Detentions, Court Security and Inmate Transports within the Detentions division; monitors program efficiency and effectiveness; assesses workload and identifies opportunities for improvement. Oversees all administrative functions in the assigned division; ensures compliance with standards, laws, codes, and internal controls; coordinates the division’s work with other departments. Participates in developing and implementing goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the division; evaluates operations and determines if new or revised processes are necessary. Supervises, trains, and evaluates Detentions staff; coordinates payroll functions; works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline and termination procedures. Participates in budget development and oversight; directs the division budget and maintains fiscal control; determines funding needs for staff, equipment, and supplies. Administers contracts and grants; negotiates contracts; ensures compliance with County specifications and service quality requirements. Supervises personnel and conducts internal investigations; prepares written reports and recommendations; ensures proper material preparation for court. Responsible for procurement of goods and services; maintains departmental equipment. Consults with and advises executive‑level staff; prepares oral and written reports; presents to commissions, committees, and boards. Serves as liaison for assigned functions with other County departments, divisions, and outside agencies; provides staff support to commissions and task forces. Stays abreast of new trends and innovations in law enforcement; researches emerging products and enhancements applicable to County needs. Monitors changes in regulations and technology; implements approved policy and procedural changes. Investigates and responds to complex and sensitive problems and complaints; reports findings and takes corrective action. Establishes and maintains official division files. Ensures staff compliance with County and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols. Serves as the Sheriff’s representative on review boards and committees. Performs related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Associates degree or equivalent college credit hours. Five (5) years of law‑enforcement experience. Two (2) years performing duties at a level equivalent to Sheriff’s Sergeant. Experience with law‑enforcement related administrative duties and grants. At least one leadership class certification (POST/CSOC/LEEDA) or equivalent. At least one instructor certification in a law‑enforcement related field. Licenses and Certifications Valid Colorado driver’s license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Possession of current P.O.S.T and applicable instructor certifications considered for incentive bonuses. Special Requirements Qualify for security clearance through a background investigation, including medical and psychological evaluations. Qualify for deputization by Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Work irregular hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays; work stand‑by and overtime as necessary; travel within and outside the County. Complete additional training, including firearms orientation and requalification to carry duty firearms regularly. Maintain peace officer qualifications per State of Colorado requirements. Current literature and information on assigned division operations. Preparation of technical and administrative reports and business correspondence. Safety rules, regulations, and protocols. Customer service techniques for interacting with the public, vendors, and County staff. Oral and written communication proficiency. Use of computer systems and relevant software. Operate firearms safely. Prepare clear reports, correspondence, policies, and procedures. Analyze and present technical information. Conduct research to improve service delivery. Represent the division and County in meetings. Maintain filing and record‑keeping systems. Organize work, meet deadlines, and follow up on assignments. Utilize computer systems and professional equipment effectively. Communicate clearly, orally and in writing. Apply tact, initiative, and independent judgment within policy guidelines. Build positive working relationships with those contacted during duties. Physical Demands Standard office activity: operating computer and office equipment, driving vehicles, occasional bending, stooping, and lifting up to 15 pounds. Fieldwork that may involve walking, running, standing on uneven terrain, climbing, and operating emergency response vehicles. Vision, hearing, and manual dexterity for firearms qualification, reading, and operating equipment. Environmental Conditions Work occurs in an office environment with moderate noise levels and controlled temperature. Incumbents may serve as Incident Commander in the field and interact with upset staff or members of the public. Disaster Service Responsibility Employees may be required to serve as Disaster Service Workers during emergencies declared by the County Commissioners. Employees will attend emergency-management training and exercises as directed by the Director of Emergency Management.
