The Hearing Officer conducts student disciplinary hearings; renders student disciplinary decisions (which could include long-term suspensions, reassignments, or expulsion recommendations); renders student sanction decisions for founded violations of Title IX; renders decisions on appeals of short-term suspensions; and collaborates to provide resources for, and staff development to, LCPS administrators and other stakeholders. Roles and Responsibilities The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate. Reviews documentation submitted in support of student disciplinary referrals and recommendations to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with relevant laws, policies, and regulations. Conducts student disciplinary hearings. Renders student disciplinary decisions and issues written notice of such. Prepares and presents student disciplinary cases to the School Board, as necessary. Assists with the implementation of division-wide student discipline procedures and practices to include the appropriate application of legal, policy, and regulatory requirements. Partners with central office administrators, school-based administrators, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure decisions resulting in exclusionary discipline are made in an equitable manner and take into mitigating, aggravating, and/or special circumstances. Assists in the preparation of reports related to student discipline to identify trends and provide data to drive program initiatives and professional development. Provides guidance and support to central office administrators, school-based administrators, and other stakeholders regarding interpretation of student discipline policies, regulations, and procedures. Provides resources and staff development to LCPS administrators and other stakeholders pertaining to student discipline. Qualifications Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable. Education Master’s degree Experience Five (5) years of experience supervision, administration, compliance, or related field Licenses and Certifications Postgraduate educational license with endorsement in school administration Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of Loudoun County Public Schools, including its organization, student body, policies, regulations, and practices Knowledge of laws, policies, and regulations related to student behavior and conduct Knowledge of issues related to equity and disproportionality in discipline Ability to conduct administrative hearings, issue reasoned and thorough written decisions, and present cases to the School Board Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Ability to maintain confidentiality Excellent administrative and human relations skills Physical Requirements The following provides a brief description of physical requirements for this job: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
