School Nurse (RN or LPN)

Cooperstown Central School District is seeking a qualified and compassionate nurse to support the health, safety, and well-being of our students and school community. The School Nurse plays an important role in promoting student wellness, supporting academic success, and maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment.

Position Summary

The School Nurse provides nursing services to students and staff, promotes wellness, assists families in addressing student health needs, and works collaboratively with school personnel to support students' educational programs as they relate to health concerns.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, conduct, or assist with student health screenings and examinations.
• Maintain accurate and confidential student health records.
• Monitor immunization compliance and complete required health reports.
• Provide first aid and emergency care for illness or injury.
• Safely administer medications in accordance with physician orders and district policy.
• Assist students and families in understanding health conditions and accessing medical resources.
• Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and the Committee on Special Education (CSE) regarding student health needs.
• Support attendance initiatives related to student health concerns.
• Help maintain a safe and healthy school environment.
• Serve as a mandated reporter for suspected child abuse or neglect.
• Coordinate with community agencies and local health departments as needed.
• Complete injury and insurance documentation.
• Provide health-related support for students with medical or physical needs.

Building-Specific Responsibilities

Elementary School Assignment

• Maintain attendance records and collect documentation for excused absences.

Junior/Senior High School Assignment

• Coordinate sports physicals and medical clearances for student-athletes.
• Confer with coaches and the Athletic Director regarding medical and insurance matters.
• Arrange completion of physical certificates required for student working papers.

Qualifications

• Current New York State RN or LPN license required.
• School Nurse certification preferred for RN candidates or willingness to obtain.
• Experience in school nursing or pediatric nursing preferred.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, staff, and community partners.
• Knowledge of health regulations, confidentiality requirements, and mandated reporting laws.
