Please note that all positions close at 12:00 AM on the posted closing date. You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date. Employee will be responsible for the scheduled field maintenance and emergency repair of Electrical, Electronic, and Computerized Traffic Control Systems throughout Division 4 counties (Halifax, Edgecombe, Wilson, Nash, Wayne, and Johnston) but primarily in Johnston County. The Employee will also assist in the installation, testing, and inspection of new Traffic Control Systems and existing systems which are upgraded. Duties performed include: locating underground utilities, installing traffic signal equipment, wiring detectors, installing and wiring controllers, tracing out electrical wiring diagrams, dismantling and reassembling components, replacing worn or faulty parts both aerial and ground mounted.
Work will be performed without constant supervision and will be evaluated by supervisor for efficient use of time and proper operation of Traffic Control Systems repaired and maintained. Skills required include: general knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe/efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in the electrical/electronic trades. Ability to diagnose source of equipment failures. Ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. Overtime work is required when necessary and the position is subject to emergency callback. The position requires participation in an on-call rotation in response to after-hours traffic signal related issues. The successful applicant will be exposed to all weather conditions and high volumes of moving traffic. The Electronics Technician is required to maintain proper records of all signal work accomplished and to keep an accurate record of time worked and all materials used via computer. Skills required include: general knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe/efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in the electrical/electronic trades. Ability to diagnose source of equipment failures. Ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. Ability to lift up to 80 pounds, shoulder high. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 60 feet in height without accommodations.
Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. Must possess ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signals and other traffic control devices. Must possess the ability to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and excessive heat conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction.
Safety toe shoes are required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A CDL with N (tanker endorsement). The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. - Knowledge of standard test equipment used to diagnose electronic components
- Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams.
- Knowledge of the National Electric Code.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal supervision.
- Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions.
