Performs a variety of general, skilled and semi-skilled duties in the servicing, repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, buses and other equipment powered by gasoline, diesel, battery electric and compressed natural gas (CNG) fuels; performs related duties as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is the journey level class in the Equipment Maintenance series. Incumbents are expected to perform assigned activities without detailed instruction as to specific procedures to be followed.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a Lead Equipment Mechanic.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED Does not exercise supervision over other employees. Essential Duties
Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Examines and locates mechanical defects in a wide variety of vehicles and construction equipment; diagnoses trouble and determines the extent of necessary repairs.
Performs major mechanical repairs and inspections; disassembles, repairs and replaces worn parts, fits new parts and replaces or repairs water and fuel pumps, carburetors and fuel injectors, governors, starting motors, clutches, differentials, brakes and steering gear.
Tunes engines and takes compression tests; repairs standard and electronic ignition systems and adjusts timing and valves; replaces or adjusts emission control devices; installs new or rebuilt engines. Overhauls engines; rewires and reconditions electrical systems components.
Performs wheel balancing; repairs or replaces exhaust systems, ignition and door locks, windows, regulators, and gauges. Services, repairs, and maintains power lawn mowers, small gasoline engines, pumps, and miscellaneous equipment and tools. Performs road tests and responds to emergency road calls.
May use arc and gas welding equipment and techniques to construct, repair, and modify parts and equipment; performs basic body repair work and machine shop work; fabricates special construction and maintenance equipment.
Keeps records of time, materials, parts, and work performed by use of worksheets and computer software program to generate work orders; determines supplies, materials, parts, and equipment necessary to complete repairs; makes recommendations on the need to replace equipment or vehicles.
May serve as acting lead in the absence of the Lead Equipment Mechanic on an occasional basis. Qualification Guidelines
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: techniques and methods of overhauling and repairing gasoline and alternate and diesel fuel powered equipment and related components, including engines, carburetors, and electrical systems; methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the trade and their use in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment; preventive maintenance inspection methods: safety regulation and safe working practices.
Ability to: diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work; repair and overhaul gasoline and alternate and diesel fuel powered equipment and related components with a minimum of supervision; read, interpret, and follow schematics and maintenance manuals; operate mechanical test equipment; understand and follow oral and written directions; prepare simple records such as completing work orders and logging completed work in individual vehicle folders; operate a computer terminal to establish work orders and maintain records; work safely.
Education and/or Experience Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. Example combinations include: Graduation from high school or equivalent and three years of progressively responsible experience as an equipment mechanic. Technical training in vehicle mechanics is highly desirable.
Required Licenses and Certificates Possession of or ability to obtain a Class A or B commercial California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. Supplemental Information

Retirement: Membership in the Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS) is as follows: Employees hired after January 1, 2013 who are new to Cal-PERS, or are returning members with a break in service greater than six months, will be enrolled into the 2% @ 62 retirement plan formula and will be required to pay up to 50% of the "normal costs" currently 8.5%). Returning members with a break in service less than six months may be enrolled into the 2% @ 55 retirement plan formula and will be required to pay 7% of their reportable compensation (employee contribution), if eligible. Furthermore as a result of PEPRA, CalPERS will take into account prior service at a reciprocal retirement system (or system that has similar agreements with CalPERS, such as CalSTRS) when determining your benefit formula when you enter membership with a CalPERS employer.

Vacation Leave: Eighty hours per year after completion of one year; 120 hours per year after completion of 5 years; 160 hours per year after completion of ten years or more.
Sick Leave : Credit for sick leave with pay shall accrue at the rate of (8) hours for each calendar month of service. A 3,000 hour Hourly Unit employee who is hired to a full-time position, shall have the right to use any previously earned sick leave while serving their probationary period in the new promotional classification. However, the probationary period will be extended by the amount of time used.
Medical Plan: Each employee has a choice of insurance plans offered through the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). The City currently pays the monthly premium cost up to $1,600.
Dental Insurance: Covered through Delta Dental Plan. The City pays 100% of the premium for employee plus dependents.
Vision Insurance: Covered through Vision Services Program (VSP). The City pays 100% of the premium for employee plus dependents.
Group Life Insurance Plan: Life insurance is provided at no cost to the employee. The City provides $5,000 term insurance to employees with less than 5 years of service. Effective the first month following completion of 5 years continuous service, employees are covered with insurance equal to one and one-half times their annual salary.
